I wasn't around for the last montauk rendezvous so I don't know the logistics but it would be a nice tribute to Walter.

Re: 2014 Northeast Rendevous
We spoke with the manager of star island back in August,he said we can't have it that weekend because of a shark tournament. Last time was at Montauk Marine Basin.

Re: 2014 Northeast Rendevous
I know owner of Montauk Marine Basin, he is current broker for Walter's boat.
He has given gift certificate for several NE Rendevouz.
That location (as in anywhere in Montauk) does not offer the easy town access such as what Greenport offers.
I can run the idea by him if we have an interest.

Re: 2014 Northeast Rendevous
Greenport has been good to us. As mentioned, everything is right there. It was also at Greenport that most of us bid a fond farewelll to Walter, so Greenport would still offer in that capacity as a tribute location. Besides, if anyone can make it to Montauk, then they can make it to Greenport....it's not that great of a difference in distance.

Only thing I can say is we need to find a way to get our tent back, that back patio and the coffee shop personalities were'nt that hot.... Was it a matter of getting a permit? I think i recall something about it being a deposit thing for getting it?

Those brothers coming from NJ or points west on south shore of Long Island can take the huge short cut and gorgeous sight seeing in the peconic thru Shennecock canal via inlet the best inlet on south shore rather then going around Montauk to Greenport. I made the trip 10 times or so but Brewster is our resident expert for details.

Re: 2014 Northeast Rendevous
If coming from Jersey, you might also consider NY Harbor to East River to LI Sound and around Orient Point.....with that you can do a halfway stop in Huntington or Port Jeferson if you want.

You would probably come into JFK on KLM. The trip from there is about 100 miles (175km I'm estimating), you can do it in a car or by train from JFK. If you plan on time in NYC first, then the train is actually an even easier way to get out to Greenport from Manhattan.
But, I think that there is some sort of link between KLM and "Islip Macarthur Airport", which would require a transfer somewhere, probably Baltimore, Boston, or Philadelphia, but that puts you at about 45 miles from Greenpoint, and again travel is available by car or train, or a pick up from one of the faithful driving right by the airport.
The train really is not a bad ride, although in the Summer on a Friday it can get packed with partying kids heading out to their summer rentals, not that there's anything wrong with that.
Keep us posted and we can advise, hell you could take the train from JFK to someone's house if you need, lot's of locals here.

Re: 2014 Northeast Rendevous
John folks arrive on Friday for a pot luck dinner. A few die hards show Thursday. Hang all day Saturday with a great lobster dinner at night. And file out on Sunday. The marina is in the heart a nice New England type. Village with plenty to do.
Only a few minute drive to wine country or a ferry ride to the Hamptons if you want to extend the trip.
If you are bringing kids there is a carousel and an ice cream shop. Plenty to keep them busy. A huge lawn to run around next the the docks. Half hour away is a water park, aquarium and outlet shopping for the ladies.

I won't be bringing the kids, but I will be bringing the girlfriend. Being a big history buff, I have always wanted to go to Boston, Cape Cod, and Nantucket - my three biggest bucket list domestic U.S. vacation spots. I'm sure Suzy would like to hit NYC for some shopping, so I'm going to pitch it as a 7-10 day trip. Either way, this is my year to make the Rendezvous...

Re: 2014 Northeast Rendevous
John,
Fly into JFK or LGA take cab into the city and hang for a few days. Then rent a car and drive east hit the wineries and the rendezvous. Just east of greenport is orient point, 10 minutes. From there you can take a ferry with the car and be in New London, CT in 2 hours. Minutes from mystic CT. From there the cape and boston are only a few hours. The New England guys can give you direction up that way.
Anything I can do to help with arrangements let me know.

Southern Brethren:
In anticipation of your trip north of the Mason Dixon line, I strongly suggest you get the Yankee Rosetta Stone -- there are many Northern Dialects, and trust me the New Yawkers don't speak Bahstun and no one know what the hell a Rhode Islandah says.
So, to sound like you are from Boston, know these words and what they mean:
blinkers - automobile directional signals
bubbler (or water bubbler) - drinking fountain.
frappe - a beverage mixed with milk and ice cream, a.k.a milkshake (in most other places).
Hoodsie - A small cup of ice cream, the kind that comes with a flat wooden spoon (from HP Hood, the dairy that sells them.)
jimmies - chocolate ice cream sprinkles
packie - liquor store (from "package store")
pissa - means something akin to "great" either realistically or sarcastically. Also spelled 'pissah'. This is just the word "pisser" with a Boston accent. Often combined with "wicked" to yield "wicked pissah".
rotary - traffic circle (or "rotary"). These high-speed circular intersections are unusually common in Greater Boston, especially as one moves toward Cape Cod). These are common in England and Australia, as well.
spa - A convenience store that has tonic on tap and (usually) sells sandwiches.
tonic - soft drink; known elsewhere as soda
whiffle - a crew cut or male haircut done with electric clippers.
If you want to sound like you are from New York, learn these words:
catty corner - on an angle to a corner
dungarees - jeans
egg cream - a mixture of cold milk, flavored syrup, and seltzer
hero - submarine sandwich
kill - a small river or strait, in the name of specific watercourses; e.g. Beaver Kill, Fresh Kills, Kill Van Kull, Arthur Kill (from Dutch)
potsy - hopscotch
punchball - a baseball-like game suitable for smaller areas, in which a fist substitutes for the bat and a "spaldeen" is the ball
scallion - spring onion
stoop - a small porch or steps in front of a building, originally from Dutch
wedge - submarine sandwich (esp. in Westchester County, New York)
And for the rest of New England, these are the words to know:
bulkhead - cellar hatchway
Cabinet (Rhode Island) - milk shake
grinder - submarine sandwich
hosey - (esp. parts of Massachusetts & Maine) to stake a claim or choose sides, to claim ownership of something (sometimes, the front seat of a car)
johnnycake (also Rhode Island jonnycake) – a type of cornmeal bread
leaf peeper - a tourist who has come to see the area's vibrant autumn foliage
necessary - outhouse, privy
packie - a liquor store (package store)
quahog - pronounced "koe-hog," it properly refers to a specific species of clam but is also applied to any clam
There will be a test, but there might be enough bourbon consumed to allow for everyone to pass -- except Thuddd.
