new outboard needed

Post by JohnCranston »

Bad weekend,
We blew up my wife's motor on her 23' bay boat. I'm looking for a new 175hp to 225 or 250hp to get me out of the dog house. I like the Yamaha SHO's 4 strokes and the E tecs, but are open to others. I found http://www.boats.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, and, were looking at there stuff. Any other leads would be greatly appreciated.
Weight is a big consideration...I don't know anything about the new Yamaha HPDI's, such as reliability on their smaller motors.
Thanks.
John.

camb25,
It was a 2001 Yamaha ox66 150 hp with a trp lower unit...twin rotating prop. The lower unit is very disirable down here in Tx for the shallow running boats.

interesting...I've never seen a trb. Is the advantage smaller prop diameters? I see quite a few boats with jackshafts in North Carolina for negotiating the shallows.

I have a 150 Etec and have had injector issues twice in three years. Probably had only 150 hrs. when first issue arose. The fix is not cheap. If I had to do it over again I would have bought the Yamaha 4 stroke. I made my decision based on weight and price.

The lower unit has a 18" shaft with a low water pickup...you can run the motor with 3/4 of the props out of the water...you can get up in less than 5"'s of water.
Les,'I'm going to San Diego today for a week, but, will give you a buzz asap.
Thanks guys.

I've spent some time on a 23' bay boat w/a 250 hpdi Yammie on the back and am very impressed.
Great fuel economy, quiet, hardly uses any oil.
My understanding is that the 4 strokes are heavier(?), with more moving parts to break.
Know some people that are completely satifsfied with their ETEC's and Zuk's
Regardless, alweays keep in mind service after the sale cause they all build on Mondays and Fridays.
Good luck

I went with a 175hp suzuki 4 stroke...479 lbs, compared to my old motor which is 5 lbs lighter...6 year warranty. A special thanks to Les, Tim and his wife Barbara. I appreciate ya'll putting in the time. Your welcome to come down and check out Reel Cowboy anytime.
Thanks.
