Terrible news but I am glad his suffering is over, we will pray for his family.

Walter was a wonderful man and I am so glad to have gotten to know him. At the last rendezvous I had put the baby (our 1 year old son Justin) on his lap and it put a big smile on his face. That was really great to see, my two boys gave him a big kiss at the end of night and I told him we'd be praying for him. I didn't believe it was a goodbye, I really thought he was gonna beat it.

The stories he told of raising his kids on Bluebeard is the dream I have aspired to. After we put the kids to bed tonight I am going to grab Walters cook book and head down to the boat with a cigar.

Anyone who has information on the arrangements please keep me posted.

We have lost a brother and very wise man.i looked forward to every rendezvous to sit down with my son in law (same business as the master) as Walter would give him some words of wisdom. We would talk of days of old fishing in Montauk ,really going to miss the phone calls and visits to oakdale Yacth for parts. The bertram gang has lost a senior member and a great person by now your sitting with uncle Vic discussing Bertram's---------- RIP.

A great guy....unfortunately Mr. C waits for no one. Truely he will be missed at the renevous. Having a big part in running the one right after 2008 (the one walter ran with the montauk crew) I can't begin to tell you how helpful he was behind the scenes. Truely a stand up guy. I'll hang on to that flying gaff with pride knowing where it came from.

walter held out long enough to come home one last time and see the water......i think everyone here can understand that. i remember seeing his car with the "bluebeard" license plate around town long before i actually met him. i remember walking up to dinaz and walter on block island and meeting for the first time. i know that walter would be the first to agree............this sandbox changed his , mine and many other lives for the better. some people put a large dent in your life just by being themselves. not hard to imagine vic and walter together sharing a clear and a cigar.

So sad to hear about Walter's passing. He seemed like a great guy and I always looked forward to his posts here. I'm sorry I never got to meet him in person. Do any of you guy's have any other pictures of Walter (preferably on or around a Bertram 31) that you could post here on the site? Might be a nice memorial to him.

To my friend Walter... I saw your boat long before I met you. You and your wife have always been so lovely, so thoughtful, so caring. Always asking about Marly, and Liz, and just asking how things are for a young whippersnapper from the other side of the sound. Though Im not sure I am as young as I once was. Walter, I am sure going to miss you. A lot. Another member of the old guard is gone. Another of the true quality people in this world. I'm going to miss seeing you out on the rip. I am going to miss seeing you at the rendezvous's. Its always been a treat. My friend, I learned of your passing on Friday. I have not really known how to wrap my head around it. This and last year, too many have gone from my life, but its just truly not about me. Its about you guys, and the legacy, and the memories. Thank you for your friendship Walter. Thank you so much. And to Uv, and Sonny, and the list goes on. Hoist a clear, give Mara a hug, and keep an eye on us. We all need it from time to time. I'm going to miss you my friend. But I do know you are here in spirit. Take care...

He really was a true gentleman. I had the pleasure of fishing with him at Port Eades and in Panama at the Tropic Star. Panama was especially memorable as i got to go light tackle fishing with him in a panga around the island the first day we were there. A more pleasant person you could not hope to meet.

Frankly, being new here I hesitated about sounding off on Walter's passing (may he rest in peace)... However, having noticed at least one mention of a recipe book of sorts and having noticed the high esteem everybody has for Walter I would like to propose the following:

Assuming this "book" isn't really a book but more a collection of recipes in some form of format (typewritten on paper, Word document etc) I'd like to do the following: Use the recipes, some pictures and some stories provided by the members to create a more "formal" book. One where on one page you have a picture of Walter and/or a story and on the next page you have a recipe. If there are many recipes that can be categorized into chapters we could preface each chapter rather then each recipe with a picture and/or story.

The initial distribution would be as a PDF "book". However, the PDF would be in a format that allows for digital printing and subsequent binding. We could (IMHO should) present the family with such a copy. In this day and age publishing a small run book is very doable.

I'd be more then happy to help out with this project. I have the professional computer applications and knowledge to get this done. All I need is consent from the members and help in the form of pictures, stories and, of course, recipes.

There goes a good idea down the scupper... Nevertheless, we could still do a memorial book with pictures and stories...

Anybody know if copies of "The Captain's Cookbook" are still available? I'd love to buy one...

walter was a VERY talented artist. he channeled his talent into the ad biz but he had the talent none the less. the guy could really draw and frankly....had the best free hand writing i ever saw. knew how to catch fish too. we always caught a bunch just messing around in the harbor. when i wanted to entertain my niece and nephew i let walter take them fishing.....cause i knew they would be busy.

Walter's cookbook is as much a work of art as a book of recipes.

When I first read thru his book and saw the pictures, it immediately took me back to what was boating in the 60's and 70's when it was a lifestyle, a better time for fishing without all the rules and regulations and licensing requirements of today.

Of fishing and crabbing with my uncle out of Barnegat NJ. Cruising the Chesapeake, visiting places like St Michaels MD and not having to dodge the clorox fleets.

Thanks for bringing back the memories Walter.
