question for smokers

Post by Bruce »

Never smoked so I don't have a clue but if cigarettes are kept in a dry cool place, how long does tobacco stay good?
I would suspect like cigars, too dry or too wet leaf is bad.

Back in 1961, aboard my first navy ship, I found an unopened pack of Lucky Strike in the original green packaging... The brand's signature dark green pack was changed to white in 1942. So these were at the very least 18 years old. They were only very slightly stale tasting, hardly different from a new pack. I'm guessing that if sealed in a truely air tight container, or better yet, in a vacuumed container, they would last for centuries...

Wheeze, wheeze...

Sounds like a commodity strategy to me... For smokers it's hard to puff on gold bullion.

Was just wondering if I should add a carton or two to my hurricane supplies as barter items. Its that time of year again to prepare.

During a hurricane I doubt that they will care if they are stale!! Seal the unopened cartons with a vacuum sealer. You can include a damp paper towel to keep the humidity up. Or give the bag a squirt of argon or nitrogen before you seal it.

I do not smoke, but can tell you to add it to your list.

Good, bad or indifferent...they are the only fix for those in need.

As a kid I recall going fishing with Dad when the boat tried to go over a log at speed.
He tried for awhile to get it jury rigged to get back in...wouldn't ask for help till he realized he forgot his extra packs of cigarettes in the car and he just smoked the last from his last pack...2 seconds later he is on the bridge honking for help...First thing he says to first boat that comes over...you got a cigarette?

By the way that was my first encounter with a 31 Bertram...that was the boat that came over to give a helping hand...tow us back and for my dad...gave him his nicotine fix. A 31 Bertram FB with twin diesels, fighting lady yellow and went by the name "Cheetah". I am pretty sure the current owner of that boat visits here once in awhile.

Yeah...put a carton or two in.

I knew that it wasn't a philosophical question with you Bruce, always thinking ahead! This weekend I should be complete in putting the beach house back together after Hurricane Sandy put 2' of ocean and other items inside it. Can't ever be too prepared again for a Hurricane. Smokes vacuum sealed will be in the ditch bag.

Bruce,
If it's around a weak Cat 3, just a couple cartons of marlboro lights.
Anything above that, and the marlboro red's will be the best bargaining chip.
Now that i know, you'll be the 1st person i look for after the riots start. :)
