Re: Bertram 31 half mold
I remember when a bunch of guys on here were looking for half hull models at a good price. I am assuming that mold came from Bertram.

Re: Bertram 31 half mold
Call me crazy, but this needs to be purchased for Captain Patrick. (not that the Captain needs any more projects to keep busy with.)
Let's get a few folks together and buy it for the site.
I'm in... but cannot arrange anything since I am also in Indonesia.
Let me know where to send the check.
Ian.

Ian not a bad idea. Lets see how many takers we can get then we can figure out how much for each of us. But maybe we should ask the good Capt. before we do this.ianupton wrote:Call me crazy, but this needs to be purchased for Captain Patrick. I am still in if others are. I do not have the knowledge to pull a part from it, but it would be cool to have.
Maybe the question should be asked differently.
If enough of us wanted a half hull model / plaque what would each be worth. If it adds to be a good way to pay some bills then let's roll.
I am an Instant message away.

I am in.
Not sure what it takes, but if we do this right, the guy who makes the half hull, can make a few bucks, the Capt. can get a cut and maybe all can be happy. The only issue is, you need someone who can glass. I knew a guy who would of done this if there were a few bucks in it for him, but he recently passed away so if you anyone knows anyone, lets talk.

I could call my glass guy a note and see what he would charge for one, but that is about it.

Re: Bertram 31 half mold
I have exchanged some emails with the person that owns it.
He sent a picture of a finished product ... it looked pretty nice.
I won't be back in Lauderdale (where the seller is) until first weekend in May.
With the "right detailed glass guy", I think there could/would be a decent market for these, but I am not that "right detailed glass guy".

Bertramp,
Let's get this thing off the market before it disappears. If the end product was good enough for Bertram to use as a promotion, it should be first class. How about ten guys put up $50 each and we can worry about getting someone to produce it later. I am in for $50.

Bertramp,
It appears that we may have some traction on securing the mold. Since you have had conversations with the seller, would you be willing to deal with him for the group? We could send checks to you and when you have the required proceeds, ink the deal. Too many Bertram things have been lost or trashed over the past fifty-years.

Working with a mold isn't that hard. Make sure it's clean and smooth. Lay down some mold separator (wax really). Get some fiberglass. Wet it with polyester or epoxy. Lay down into the mold. Let dry a little bit. Repeat until you have the desired thickness. Let dry completely. Remove from the mold. Deburr. Paint.SteveM wrote:someone who is good at this stuff
Or, you can start with a layer of pigmented gelcoat after the waxing. Saves the last step (paint).
Back in the day I used to make my own props (free flight glider models). Getting the mold was the hard part!
Might even get my warehouse guy to do it. He's got lots of spare time (that he's getting paid for) on his hands.

Re: Bertram 31 half mold
I am scheduled to meet with the current owner of the mold during the first weekend in May when I'm in Lauderdale.
He worked at Bertram for many years and I think realized I'm a fan by my email address (same as handle on here).
I offered a deposit to hold it, he said "no need" .... so I think we are in good shape.
He wants to see it have a good home.
Once I have it in hand, we can figure out the best place for it to reside and how to work the $$.
Fingers are crossed.

Buju - do you do small work?
Yes, I could easily pop some half hulls out of that little mold...
But with the amount of interested individuals, we're looking at a relatively serious undertaking with the time (mostly) and materials involved to do so.
I'm thinking that folks are going to want their own hull/bottom color schemes as well, that's where it becomes very time and labor intensive.
Could do them all in a basic white gel/polyester/mat... and then shoot urethane on the hull and/or bottom for who requests it for at whatever extra $$...
Point is, I'd be very happy to help out- and I wouldn't be looking to really make money off it, but I sure don't want to come out of pocket to do it either... Then there's the time factor, which is the reason my damn skiff project isn't quite finished after almost three years, and my B20 and B25 are back burnered. Always something else taking priority and causing me to work extra jobs to fund it... Just got a shiny new metal roof though- but it was supposed to be a shiny new E-Tec 150 H.O... Oh well.
Anyway, if we can swing something that works out, I'll be honored to lay up the mini berts for you guys.

Bertramp and others.... count me in too please. and thanks. Buju, another idea is to just pop out a rough hull and us hobbiests could do our own finish work.... just kicking ideas around.... but by no means do we expect you to go into your pockets or labor time without being rewarded... so price it fair to you.
Steve, as soon as you get a price for everyone I'll get a check in the mail.
Thanks again

Edit to add...... UV gave me a great shrimp dip recipe..... maybe a shrimp mold at the next Rendezvous would be appropriate ;-))

Sorry you were offended but all I did was offer to deal with it now rather then 2-3 weeks down the road. Hammer the steel while it's still hot so to speak. For the good of the group.Buju wrote:
FWIW, the item is STILL posted on Craig's List. That doesn't fill me with the warm and fuzzies. Call me cynical but I have lost out on too many items that I really wanted because things weren't nailed shut. The person changed their mind or got a better offer...
In this case I think that since so many of us want it we should do something about it. The sooner the better. If we decide to go that route we have the means to do so.
But you know what, it's just an opinion and you're free to disagree. Accusing me of acting in bad taste is another matter.
Re: Bertram 31 half mold
Nah, I know Ray. Would never imply that y'all would expect me to... I just think that the very nature of doing a moderate volume of small layups, and then custom painting them has a high potential to entail more than initially expected... I'm good at doing that.RAWicklund wrote: but by no means do we expect you to go into your pockets or labor time without being rewarded... so price it fair to you.

I mean, if two guys want a fighting lady hull, one sea foam, four ice blue, several oyster white, 1 aqua mist, etc, etc- and then different bottom colors- the costs of the urethane alone are going to escalate quickly. I like the idea of just doing them all white... that's predictable.
Or if Steve can get a handle on who did 'em originally, but I'm sure it was any of several of their layup guys in the factory who had the opportunity at the time when they were needed...
Would be cool if you guys get this going. Could also do them on oiled or highly varnished teak, mahogany, or ipé plaques with the boat name & hull # engraved as well.

Re: Bertram 31 half mold
Steve
Great job.
Guys, I don't think the mold is going any place fast even if it is on Craig list. Some one would need to think they could make a killing selling us the half hull. They take a chance doing that. We could all say take a hike and the guy is stuck with a $500 out lay. It is only valuable to us and a few outside of here.
Let's let Steve close the deal. Then we can figure out the rest.
But there is one thing we need to do. Whom ever becomes the keeper of the mold, needs to put it in his or her will to pass it on to a board member and then that member must do the same until it is in the hands of the last surviving member. So we are setting up a succussion plan so to speak.
Just saying.

Please let me be clear.........Mr. Navatech you come off as a a bit of a D-bag.
Perhaps you are used to being the boss and having everyone listening to and clearly understanding your intent. But quite frankly the few of your posts that I've read are very easily misinterpreted and are arguably condescending.
Remember its a forum, you sir are one of the newest members in this family. Kind of like the new boyfriend coming to meet the family for the first time, nobody really trusts you or knows you and it is in your best interest to be very clear and leave no room for misinterpretation (a sometimes difficult thing when writing in cyber space).
And as for the OP, I like Tony's idea and would gladly order a plain white plug and finish it myself
