Saloon door lockset

Hi Guys,

I am in the process of installing a new set of saloon doors on my boat and I was wondering if anybody has any advice as to what lockset I should go with?

I know I know, not as interesting as some topics, but security is a big deal!

The best available, that I could find for Hancock's B31, and absolute security was the Mobella McCoy Star MA-02-331-01-100 available through Southco.

The key is cut into a high security blank, available only through Southco/Mobella. Order a duplicate set with the lockset and store them away.

I have hung thousands of doors not marine residential and commercial and some industrial.

What kind of material is the door made of ?

I ask because when you mortise out the end of the door it can make them weak.

The door was made by epoxy laminating two pieces of 1/2" plywood face to face, then epoxy laminating heavy Formica for the facings and edges. The lockset required a slightly over 1/2" mortise for the thickness of the lock body. Any weakness caused by the mortise is compensated for buy the fully assembled lockset.

Nice installation captain should be plenty strong enough for the application with the marine ply.

I've laminated a few jobs maybe 100 sheets, i once did 20 dental office cabinets in a building laying out sheets and glued them from one end to the other on the second floor hallways so much fumes thought we were going to blow up sky high.

Guy working with me went straight for the room with some kind of gold finishing spinning machine and opened up the cabinet to laminate and rolled up a nice ball of gold from the spin off.

Capt Pat, is that epoxy or just gloss paint over the laminate on the exterior of the door?
If so, what did you use to make it adhere the the formica?

Eric,

Formica is easily painted using standard paint preperation. The surface was sanded well, first with 80 grit then with 120 grit, then primed with 2 applications of Awlgrip 545 epoxy primer. Sanded again with 240 grit, then topcoated, in this case with Awlgrip 2000. All surfaces were cleaned with Awlprep before spraying.
