I have been invited to bring my Rybo to Mystic Seaport this July, boat is currently in the great lakes, when I start down the Hudson, dont know which way to turn when I meet the Atlantic, any captans/ guides available to meet me inNYC or before to get me to Mystic , also want to retain the services of this person to manage the boat for several months till the hurricane season subsides so the boat can be moved to Palm Beach, maybe end of Sept, need to make a decision soon, is dockage tough, boat can be moved closer to Greenport

Simplistically speaking, when you come out of the Hudson, turn East (left turn) and run down the length of long island (120 miles), and at the Point, turn left to Montauk harbor and fuel up/rest. From there Mystic is a 1-2 hr NNW run just past Fischer's Island. Greenport is a 1-1 1/2 hr run from both Montauk or Mystic. Should the weather be bad running the south shore of Long Island (we call it the outside route), there is an inside route. Slower, but more scenic. Come around the tip of Manhattan and run North up the East river through Hell's Gate into Long Island Sound. Then based on the lee side of the wind, run east up the LI or Conn shoreline. A look at some charts will show you how easy it will be. If you do choose to go the inside route, I would suggest planning your timing so as to go through Hell's Gate and later, the Race at slackish or lesser periods of the tide. If you plan to run the outside route, fuel up at one of the marinas on the New Jersey side after the George Washington Bridge so you can make the run in one shot without having to navigate some of our mid-island inlets that can be pretty treacherous at times. Sounds like the Mystic thing is going to be very special.
If you plan on keeping the boat at Montauk, I'll be glad to find a place for it and check it regularly for you. Walter

It'd be shorter running down the Sound. LI Sound is deep, really easy to navigate, and a nice ride.

I would agree safer, easier and shorter to run the sound rather then the ocean and around montauk Is it possible to not go around the southern tip of manhattan and go through the Harlem River?

I would guess Bob Lico would have a few contacts to help you out, last I heard he was going to be offline getting a new computer. I can pass along his cell if you'd like. He's over in a big marina that moves boats often from NY to FL.

It would be really great if you joined us for the Greenport rendezvous.

I haven't done it in years, but you can take the Spuyten Duyvel from the Hudson River to the Harlem River and not have to go to the end of Manhattan. Of course, you would miss the views, including the Statue of Liberty if you do, but it will save a lot of time.

Marlin,

I have the Rybovich book and was wondering which Rybo you own? What is the hull # and length? Post some pics here if you have them. I will be on a family vacation in Old Forge New York when the Rybo Rendezvouis goes off. I am trying to figure out how to break away for a day to go, but it's a 6 hour drive and the wife is not too excited about me leaving her with the kids so I can go look at boats. I know that everyone in the Rybo community is very excited about your boat coming down for the show. Have a great trip down.

Hi Marlin,

I have a summer place just outside of mystic, and keep my bertram on the Mystic river.

Send me a note if I may help in ANY way. I know all the marina's well, and may be of help there. I also have a couple people local to Mystic who might be of help when it comes to managing etc.

As for the run up the sound, not much to hit, and the guys have covered most of it already.

The 6 hour drive might be significantly less if you take the ferry from Long Island to CT. There is one that goes from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport, then it is only an hour drive from there. I don't know if Port Jefferson runs to New London, but Mystic is only 20 minutes from there.

Nix the Harlem River shortcut. Things are regularly hurled from bridges (including bodies) at boats. Some years ago and engine block went through two decks before coming to rest on a motor yacht.

I have to say I got a bit of a laugh from Harrys explanation of the dangers of the Harlem river, although I am not surprised.

Marlin, another thought that may effect your decision. The long island sound is the quickest route to Mystic, you will also have the opportunity to fish for bass and bottom fish. If the boat has the range and you chose to go out into the Atlantic you could troll along the canyon for tuna and other pelagic species. Then come around montauk and spend a few days bass fishing in montauk before going up to Mystic. You could also choose to not go to montauk but rather go in through the shinnecock canal and peconic bay. The water between the eastern forks on the island.

You could also choose a multiple day trip either the sound or ocean and stop and see the sights along the way. Many of us can make suggestions of good places to stop. I am sure others would also make the offer in their local area but if you chose the ocean route and wanted to stop and overnight at fire island I would be willing to meet you in the ocean and help you navigate to the port of your choice.

Marlin,

At this point my only question is what is your level of familiarity with coastal CT? There is a S%&T ton to do in that area. Long Island is very pretty, and a great place to visit. But Mystic and its surrounding area is a very good place to be, with a ton of cruising and day trip opportunities.

i been away on installation of national security equipment. no computer . what do you need ? NYPD harbor patrol escort, armed black hawk helicopter over head or just a slip at oakdale yacth along side rybovich hull # 26 . brewster is a great captain so i will not go there.

If you don't want to go alllll the way down the Hudson and deal with a tremendously excessive amount of ferry, cruise ship, water taxi, tug, or barge traffic throwing 5-6' rolls all over the place take the Spuyten Duyvil RR bridge into the Harlem River, I can personally guarantee you that nothing (bodies, etc...) are going to come flying at your boat and the views are surprisingly scenic... Just make sure that you favor the right side of the channel (near old wrecked fishing piers) approx 1/2 mi past the RFK Bridge... Any ?'s don't be afraid to PM me... I can provide escort if need be...

Marlin, once inside the sound, past oyster bay, its a straight shot to Fishers Island and then bang a hard left to the Mystic Seaport. On a clear day, you can see both sides of the sound, CT on your left and LI on your right....total distance from centerline is around 10 to 15 miles with plenty of ports along the CT side.....I have a very good Maptech chart if you need. I can mail it to you and get it back at the rondezvous if you'd like as I'll be there admiring the local work. Its probably a 4-6 hour ride once inside the sound.

Debris that floats, flies or falls makes me nervous. I'll take the Hudson any day and salute the Statue of Liberty as I pass. Just my 2 cents.

Well I am on the Hudson River from Yonkers to the VZ Bridge literally every single day and know how snotty it can become overloaded with ferries and inexperienced boaters and psycho jet-skiiers... Had 2 boats taking on water today alone today, one just off the statue and the other one a little further up north... I dont know where to get started on debris lol theres a rip thats just south of the tip of manhattan to gov island that seems to catch everything from full sized trees to lines to refrigerators after theyre done spinning around in the rip for a while it seems like theres a conga line of 12"x12"'s pilings etc from there to the VZ, I will post some more photos asap...

unfortunately I had to abort this trip today due to some business conflicts , thanks Walter, Brewster ,Dug and others for your offers, this was on my bucket list, but the bucket got kicked over,wanted to be at the b31reunion ,maybe next year, will be heading down the Hudson after labor day,thx again

Yeah I know about that stuff!
Had to leave my anchor behind after the fire works. It seemed after the tide change I could only get to the start of my chain 50' worth in 20' of water! After awhile of trying everything and not get a inch more I said good bye to a nice 22lb danforth, swivel and chain!
Then coming back down from Catskill N.Y hit a submerged log and now have a slight vibration in port wheel!
But I did make through Harlem river without anything flying at me.

I didn't know you where in my neck of the woods. My shop is a few blocks up from Sandy Hook Pilots, Pouch Terminal, The Ol' Homeport and while my boat is around the South Shore of the Island I do fish around the VZ...or at least used too....I was there Saturday.

Used to fish the harbor years ago on a commercial boat, boat had SS Tubes that followed the chines and wrapped the prop area so when running at night we could hit just about anything without destroying the hull and prop. That took some getting used to..running and having solid hits one after the other thru-out the night...back then the harbor was horrible...now its just bad. Good times though...
