Why no diesel synchronizers?

Post by STeveZ »

I ran a B28 Moppie w/ twin Mercs that had a Guest synchronizer, but I have never heard of synchronizers for a pair of diesel engines.

Is it because synchronizers get their reading off the distributor on a gas boat?

That also got me wondering if and how the tachometer on diesel engine differs from a gas engine.

Well, the short answer is diesels don't have an ignition system. Diesel syncronizers work off a cable drive, like the Glendenning. Diesel tachs work in one of 3 ways: (1) a cable drive like the speedo on your car, (2) alternator pickup, where the tach counts the a/c voltage output frequency - not very reliable, and (3) a magnetic pickup where a sensor that screws into the bell housing counts the number of flywhell teeth that pass under it in a given amount of time.

On the other hand, unless you are deaf, you can syncro a pair of diesels with your ear better than any mechanical device. Right Mikey?

YEa, UV, especially when one tach don't do nuffin and the capt yells.
When the pressure's on we rise to the occassion.
The B46 I piloted had a pair of Detroits that were much easier to synchonise by ear than mechanically.
Like Vic says, "Just listen."

One of my tachs has died on the 35. Is this one tack or two you've got?
