Over many decades of maritime life you can collect a lot of gear. Some of it is too cool to discard so it hangs around in the gear locker forever-or until now. I’m cleaning up a bit and posted some 40 year old but never used deck fittings from our sailboat rig out plus a few newer things like a night vision camera I’ll never use. Carl could probably spend hours just fiddling with the deck fittings. They are posted on Swap & Sell.

Let me explain:
Traveling or cruising in a motor boat at night is extremely rare, due to the inherent danger involved (floating debris, rocks, idiots at sea, etc). The occasional sailboat that travels at night is justified by its very low speed (hence no real danger with floating debris), and the need to cover the distance by taking advantage of the extra night hours. Whatever the reason, this act of night travel does not constitute a critical mass to form an association of night vision technology to the subconscious of a population, even if all sailors were using such night vision equipment, which they don't.

Also, use of firearms of any type, mainly for hunting purposes, is forbidden at night. So no real use of night vision there either.
Which brings us to the realization that any night vision equipment is almost necessarily associated to "pink" connotations!
Different cultures, different behaviors...
I also added an LOL to my previous comment, just to show that even I was mocking of the suggested use.

My dad owned a registered hunting riffle from his young age; he used to go hunting back in the times where there was something to hunt.
A few (3-4) years ago, when he was approaching 90yo, he received a call from the police, telling him there was no record of any hunting permit renewal by him for a long time, and that given his age he could no longer obtain one. Therefore he had to turn-in his riffle. He replied that he was too old to circulate in the city with a riffle and the danger associated, so the police visited him at his house and took the riffle away for ever. He couldn't even pass it on to us, because we don't have a hunting permit either...

Yesterday, just yesterday, I had to visit a Psychiatrist, not a shrink. The reason being that I needed a medical document proving that I am sane, I do not take any sort of psychological drugs (a report readily available to the doctor when he runs my SSN through the system), so that I can go buy the necessary flares for the boat! I then went to the police station and signed a "no firearms" possession document. I am waiting for approval for the purchase of the flares, if denied I will have to sell the boat...

This is to say that night vision equipment have nothing to do with either hunting or sailing. That's why they are only associated, right or wrong, to other activities... for which you suggested I offer too much info about!

So a shrink to see if your normal enough to handle flares on a boat you don't travel with at night. Hmm, how'd that go??? Tell 'em about the Mermaid Bench? Kidding of course, lol.

Government butting into places they do not need to be. I grew up with guns. Backwoods upstate and I used to shoot competitively in high school and some college. When I stopped I didn't want to deal with the hoops to keep the guns and gave a couple away, and sold off the competitive guns.

As to flares...not sure if permissible by you, but here we can now use E-Flares to meet the requirements. I originally bought just as its easier to show the E-Flare over pulling out my container of real flares, flare gun with both the new stuff and a couple of the most recently expired items. Had an Officer grab the wrong items, this shouldn't be...blah blah. So now its here's the E- Flare and lets move onto the next item you need to see.

Another big plus to E-Flare, no fire, no molten stuff to drip onto your deck which sits just above 200 gallons of fuel.

Hoops, we have to jump thru hoops to keep firearms legally here in NYC. Had a competition Air riffle, glorified BB Gun...With a rifle permit I can bring to and from ranges, no more practicing outdoors as it illegal to do that. I had to keep the rifle and ammo in separate locked containers. OK...um the ammo consists of a lead pellet and air. How do I put the air in a box? I guess close the lid.

Its only a step away from seeing a doc to get cleared to use flares...are they the flares in the pistol? At least those look like something sinister...although bright orange.

Oh...and to have an Air Compressor here at the shop, I had to go to the City and take a test, hand over $50 bucks for the license which gets renewed yearly. All the machinery and I have to be certified to use the Air Compressor.

Think I'll make an appointment to go see a shrink...something is just so wrong. I'll ask 'em if I can get my flare certification while I'm there...in case I move to Greece or they change requirements here.

Ok I'll bite, why in the world would you need the State to approve you to have an air compressor? Maybe just maybe you might pick it up and throw it at someone, or if you get really mad at a customer, stick the air nozzle some place it doesn't belong.

The mindset is different here in Europe.
Hand guns, I mean all types of guns, except hunting guns, are not allowed. There is simply no way you can legally own a pistol, a riffle or anything for whatever reason except for hunting purposes. Only VIP's, who can perhaps acquire a specific permit for reasons well justified by their augmented risk, or perhaps some other category of civilians (which I'm not aware of), may carry a gun legally and that's about it.

As for hunting guns, unless you fulfill a certain set of prerequisites (shrink approval, age, no prior violent history, valid hunting permit, riffle possession paperwork, ...) you cannot own, let alone carry, a hunting riffle. And the situation is getting even stricter, just compare my dad's removal of ownership because of age...

The result of all this is, of course, the guns-related death rate in Europe to be more than 20 times less, than in the US. In some countries up to 50 or 60 times less. Incidents such as those of kids going to schools with loaded guns, and whatever aftermath these activities produce, are (almost) unknown.

When the communist block broke apart in the '90's, all hell broke loose. Thousands of eastern European guns, and I mean serious guns like Kalashnikoffs and all other types of combat riffles and amo were dispersed, illegally obviously, in all the rest of the countries. Now authorities are having a hard time removing all those weapons from circulation, not an easy task, especially in violence prone areas, or geographical areas that had a propensity for gun ownership like in Crete, Sicily, Corsica and similar...

Lots of Europe handles pistols and rifles outside of the service and hunting. I do however agree with you the mindset in many places is firearms are taboo, a danger to civilization. Me, I grew up with guns around, was taught how to handle with respect. Its just a tool in my mind, not dangerous unless in the wrong hands. Kinda like a car, a boat, a knife or a...

I thought to mention the various athletic teams with pistols, rifles, etc, but then I thought they are a drop of water in the ocean, that's why I didn't put them in the equation.
