Searching for a diesel 31

After a 10 year hiatus, I am back and looking for a diesel powered 31. Needs to be a really, really good deal! It’ll be kept on the Upper Chesapeake Bay and used lightly. Some cruising and some fishing.

Anyway, I’ve searched on BT and YW and was curious if anyone knew of a private sale, etc.

And not to be too picky but I’m not sure the 210/220hp engines would work. The bigger the better!

And yes, I know the Bayliss boat is available! LOL.

Thinking about selling. I unfortunately don't use it that much anymore. She has 300hp 6bta M2's. New paint (that I did myself so it is an 8/10). I removed the bathroom and made a bench seat. The rest of the interior is original. Air conditioner. No generator. Some rot in the bulkheads needs to be addressed. I would call it a "semi-project boat." Definitely fishable but far from showroom. Also, it had a hole knocked in the side during Katrina but was repaired. I can take some more pics or answer any questions you may have. I'll need to do some comparables on boat trader, etc. to figure out a price.

JJ I’d be interested to see what you found on the market for diesel powered FBCs in decent condition. We bought Amberjack a couple decades ago and always wonder what value to put on it for insurance purposes.

The only reason my 52y.o. B28 is insured, is because I had started the insurance a long time ago. Otherwise, if you step into a new plan, no insurance covers any boat so old. They cover alright all third party liability, injuries and pollution (compulsory by law), but the boat itself cannot be covered.
Even my 25yo dinghy valued at 5K max is not covered, except for the legal requirements stated above.

Here in my Country if you provide a certified survey of the boat, you may have a full value insurance; something similar to Classic Cars Protection.
Can't even imagine somebody buying that Bayliss 31 for those figures, not having her insured for a proper value...

I have the survey which I conducted before I bought my boat, but this is probably long overdue...
Anyway, like I said, my boat is insured so I keep this in mind for a future boat, haha, there will not be a future boat!

I just had to have a survey of my boat which will be 50 years old next year. The insurance company wanted it to make sure she was sea worthy and to make sure the hull value on it is correct.

The only issue I have the surveyor had a couple of weird recommendations and the Insurance company says I need to follow through on his recommendations. It's not a big deal but when they I need to have a copy of the rules of the road on the boat, I kind of scratch my head as to what that has to do with their liabilities if she goes down.

How much do they think is a correct value Tony?
Do they consider any extras on the boat as insurable?
What if you consider the value of the boat to be above of what they think? Will they insure you for that amount?

They survey came in at $75,000 but they are only giving me $55,000 as the value. Geico really doesn't want older boats.

I insured mine for 50K € and I believe that they accepted it only because it is a logical value.
I added a 2m inflatable dinghy with a 2.5hp Suzuki, for a total of 53K €.

They expect you to have an automatic fire suppressant system inside the engine bay. I told them that this is impossible because of lack of space.
They reverted that they need to see pictures of all available portable extinguishers (the law requires 2 and I have three), and I only hope that they like my photography skills!

The issues with an automatic system is that you need to have a engine shut down connected to it. Otherwise the diesel just sucks it all in and spits it right out, so it is useless.

The engines laugh at Halon.

Can't remember where I read it, but I remember someone putting a port in the side of the engine box that they could open and spray a fire extinguisher into it. It was suggested that doing that was better than opening the hatch to fight the fire.

On the other hand, an experienced friend suggests that when you see fire, jump overboard quickly.
He claims there is simply no way you can suppress a diesel fire.
I do not want to test the validity of this claim!

I'm down with that, Ive seen boats burn, I would suggest a swim too.

I think I'd like to access the situation a little before taking that dive.

Is fire just taking hold, or out of control.

Whats fueling the fire, small hose, fitting or something bigger.

I'd prefer to give extinguishing a try if offshore, night-time, water is cold, if sharking n chumming, heavy seas.

Once overboard there is no going back, if out of control...no need to go back.
