Steering Cylinder-Hynautic K22 Rebuild/Seal Kit

Post by jackryan »

Faithful,

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that I had a substantial leak in my Hynautic steering cylinder that most of the steering fluid had leaked out of. I removed the cylinder and brought it to a local repair shop here in New Orleans that works with Seastar, who I guess bought Hynautic some years ago.

The cylinder had no markings on it, so I wasn't sure what model it was. The repair shop took some measurements and contacted Seastar and came to the conclusion that it was a K22 cylinder. The repair shop ordered a seal kit to rebuild the cylinder and have since informed me that that rebuild/seal kit is on back order. (you guessed it, COVID)

It has been a month now and they contacted me today to let me know it's still on back order and suggested that I try to find the kit somewhere else.

Does anyone here in the sandbox have a source for a good rebuild/seal kit for a Hynautic K22 steering cylinder? The repair shop warned not to buy the kits from Amazon as they are cheap and fail quickly after instillation. My boat is dead in the water until I can get this repair complete.

Many Thanks!

I often have equipment with old/weird hydraulics. If we can't find OEM seals, we remove whatever is left of the seals and take them to a local seal jobber (fluidseal in my neighbourhood) and generally they can match them up and it us usually WAY cheaper (sometime $5.00 to their beer fund) The issue is they need the original seals to match them up.

As usual, great stuff guys! I located a seal kit down in Ft. Lauderdale. I think the repair station here can rebuild the cylinder once he has the seal kit, but if he runs into any problems I'll try the operations you guys suggested.

Many Thanks!
