Need a captain
Hi guys. I've been reading this site for a while although I don't post often and I don't personally know many of you. I have a 1995 30' Moppie and I'm looking to see if any of you are or know of a captain that would be interested in a one day venture. The boat is currently in Mantoloking, NJ and I need to get it to Newport, RI. I used it on the Chesapeake for several years and I brought it up to NJ last season. I only need help the first leg of the journey which would be Mantoloking (out Manasquan inlet) to wherever (east of Stamford, as far as we can go in 5 - 6 hours at 22 - 24kn cruise). I will bring it the rest of the way. I ask this because I am unfamiliar with these waters in northern NJ and NYC (East River, etc) and I'd rather just go with someone who knows these waters instead of spending the time to study them myself (just don't have the time). I'm looking to do this in the next couple of weeks (weather permitting) and, if I get pressed for time, just have someone do it all the way. If you know anyone that you think may be interested and is a very good captain (knowledgeable, trustworthy, etc), please let me know. Thanks. Greg N.
NY harbor
You may be psyching yourself out and making this out to be more than it really is ... NY Harbor is a big, deepwater port, and boats a whole lot bigger than a 30' Bertram transit through the East River out through LI sound every day. Well marked, easily navigated, etc. In fact, the hardest part of the trip is after you get into LI Sound... because you will have to dodge semi-submerged pot markers for the next 100 miles. As Randall notes, it is actually easier and faster to just go straight. You can blast off frm Manasquan and go direct to Montauk, overnight, then push on to RI the next day. You have more than enough boat to go either route.
I've run both routes many, many times in boats as small as a 22' single engine dory to a 40' wooden cruiser with almost zero electronics (OK, it was back in the 1970's with the woodie)... alas, never in a Bertram. I can only imagine what it would be like to do that trip in a real boat.

From the Manasquan Inlet to Montauk (straight shot) and then on to Newport is about 170nm.
From the same starting point going the Long Island Sound route to Newport is about 205nm.
I have done the Point Pleasant Canal.

Thanks guys. I will call you Capt Dick and I also got PM'd by another member as well. The reason I thought the LI Sound would be better is if we ran into any mechanical problems (shouldn't but you never know as I have Crusader 7.4s and who knows these days with ethanol, etc) there are more marinas readily available versus having to grab an inlet on the south shore of LI and there are not a lot of marinas even once you're inside. The boat is going in this week and will be test run and tuned, etc. so it should be okay. I'll be in touch. Greg N.
Greg, check your filters and run it, you'll be fine. I ran from Atlatic City to Baltimore last year on my crusaders. Took about 9-1/2 hours and as Diesel Doug said, it's a nice ride, SLOOOW, but nice.
Good luck on your trip, try to make it to one of the rendezous, they're a blast. The B31 guys are tolerant of other models as well.

I ran from Mattituck Inlet to Hoffman's @ Maniscuan by myself with no issues three years ago. Hells Gate with the bell bouy laid over @ a 30 degree angle due to the current will keep you on your toes but far more interesting views than the shore of LI. Get Dick Dean to help but make the trip with him for the experiance.

If you have never been through New York City by boat it is worth it just for the experience. It isn't all that hard to navigate, and it is quite a sight.
Maybe outside is quicker/shorter, but just for the experience of it do the East River and LI sound.
If you can manage it try to get through Hell's Gate near to slack tide.
Just my 2 cents.

Here's a link to a page from my website. I was chartered to escort a group of swimmers around Manhattan. Due to a fast passing squal, we were cut short between Hell's Gate and Styten Divell bridge. There are some photos of what you can expect to see if you take the scenic route. The harbor and East River is all deep water and clearly marked.
