Front "step" is almost done, faired everything on the top. Only thing to do is fair front of the step.

I needed to replace the turbo heatshield's as they were trashed. I think they were asbestos or something similar and the turbos are oil cooled. Started looking for a set and they wanted $ 400+ for each one new. Went on ebay and someone was selling both of them used for $40 including the elbow covers. Everything shipped $73. They were for a 8v92 but fit like a glove.

I've been away for almost a month. I've been sanding the hull sides and fairing everything to prime it in the next 2-3 weeks. Only have about 10' more on 1 side. Then I'll prime the sides and start sanding top sides. Also installed today the sump pump for the bathroom and the fitted the cook top where the old stove was.

Finished sanding the sides. I will start with the bottom paint on the sides (under the flotation line) and then will prime the sides and start sanding top sides.

Today I installed back the front cleats and anchor roller, cleats have a 3/8 aluminum backing plate and the anchor roller has aluminum c channels cor backing plates. I drilled the 2 holes needed for the windlass today and put a pvc pipe inside the holes coated on the outside with resin so that no water touches the new wood (pic tomorrow). Windlass is getting installed tomorrow. Anchor roller should go farther back but then the anchor would touch the hull. Also was able to buy original teak doors. Bought them from CA and brought them all the way to PR.

I started today wiring the windlass. After that was done I started with the doors. I just did one today, the paint was SUPER hard to remove, started with 40 grit, then 80 grit and 220 grit on the painted side, on the other side 80 grit and 220 grit.

Started priming today, all the areas that were worked on were primed but ran out of primer.

Looks like you are rolling the primer. Are you going to roll and tip the whole boat with the final paint job.

Anchor roller backing plates are an overkill! If the deck is like a Bertram’s deck, you can lift the Titanic...

Progress has been slow this last 3 weeks, removed the Hynautic steering system from the boat and had to remove both rudders and their bushings as both were frozen in place. Cleaned and greased everything up and installed it back last weekend.

Wow looking good did a lot so far this bring Old memories and some not so Old ones. I have had my 34C for 19 years this month and just finished redoing the hull for the second time did it 18 years ago.
I can't believe Timmy didn't tell me about this thread oh wait I forgot who were talking about never mind.
I would suggest turning the generator 180 degrees when it goes back that way you have better access to the motor end which get the maintenance. Is that a 8K MDKD looks just like mine and these never came in a 34 to new as in 1980 vintage the Newer stuff
Those back doors are Mahogany the hole boat came that way no teak and at least you had plywood across the door, when I bought mine it had no doors at all, the doors where in his garage and he had them all screwed up.
These are from this past winter just got it splashed May 1st.
Did you have big dips were the bulkheads were tabbed to the hull?

Hey,
You are correct on the generator info. Originally it had a 3kw. This one is 8kw and will be going the other way around as its not serviceable the way they installed it. Its from 1989 and it only has 257 hrs.

I continue with the fiberglass work, Apparently the PO didn't like to use fenders, Both sides were cracked, fixed in the past just using filler.

About fenders since you mentioned it:
Since we have a totally different way of mooring here in the Med, we use fenders a lot. The key here is to choose the right size. Ideally the bigger the better, however you need to find the best combination so that they are big enough to protect you, yet, small enough so you can store them somewhere. And before you answer that there is plenty of space for fender storage on board, think twice! For us the most practical storage is on the bow using hanging baskets from the rail.
Boats our size usually carry at least 6 (Polyform F2) and 2 (round Polyform A2) or equivalent. You'll be surprised how much space they take and how stubborn they are to sit quiet where you...ask them to.
Second, you have to have fixtures to hang them from, when they are in use, that are spread all around the boat. Except for cleats that are only available in a few places (bow, stern, perhaps mid-ships) we use rails which, if they do not exist on the boat already we install them ourselves. It is VERY practical to hang a fender from a railing versus from a cleat. The cleat is fixed so that if you need to move the fender by a little (forward or aft) you cannot; railings cover wide areas so you can slide the fender to where exactly you want it quickly, when conditions impose it.
Fenders should not be hung on mooring rope carrying cleats, they should be hung independently, or else you run the risk to have to untie the boat to untie the fender and move them...also, with the extra small cleats that your boats usually have, it is almost impossible to tie them securely when a mooring rope is already tied onto them.

Today I had to cut where the cleats go in the back as the inside core was rotten, core was replaced and 2 layers of mat to seal everything back.

Finished fairing where the cleats go. Also sealed where the helm was. It will be replaced with a new system. For last, removed the HEAVY engine hatches and replaced them with a 3/4" wood sheet that comes with aluminum on each side. This is way lighter. Almost forgot, had to make a new step to go down into the galley. With the original the fridge door almost wouldn't open.

Not a lot to report. Just sanding, sanding and more sanding from the rub rail up.

I'm back to report progress. I've been sanding every weekend. Only things left to sand is the floor in the back and the inside of the flying bridge.
Today's report: PO had cut this big holes to have storage and access to the electric switches in the bridge. He then put aluminum flat bar around the cut pieces and piano hinges to create the storage doors. I removed everything today, including switches, gauges, vfh, etc. from the bridge. Also used the removed lids to seal some other holes. I'm planning on having some custom hatches made on boat outfitters.I cut the removed pieces and fiberglassed them where there were some vents, also where the electronics were installed as I want to flush mount everything.

Almost finished the flying bridge (will take pics tomorrow) and decided to pressure wash the back end of the boat, miraculously almost all the paint came right off..... and some gel coat from the floor. I'm going to hit it again tomorrow to see if I can get some more paint off. Better now than when painted.

Great Story! And to only be in your thirties... that is awesome. I have purchased project boats, refurbished them, enjoyed and moved on, but also always made a profit by buying at the right price and the right boat! What a great way to keep moving up.
I too learned my skills from my Father, but most important he taught me that I can do anything if I set my mind to it! At your age and skill set the sky is the limit! Best to you and keep the pictures coming.

Only update from this week is I cut the holes for speakers, vhf and music radio. I'm tired of sanding so took a break from it. Only thing left to sand i the back part of the boat.

Almost finished with the sanding. Today I sanded the back part of the boat and paint started to come up. Apparently they never sanded the primer. Used a 1 edge razor blade to remove all the paint. My fingers are sore.... After I removed the paint, I sanded everything. Only thing left to sand is the back floor. Hopefully I'll finish with the sanding next weekend.
