Shaft Log Question

I removed the 1 3/8 shafts on my 31 and will be replacing with 1 1/2 inch...Can I use the existing shaft log or does it need to be changed?? I know I have to machine the struts and replace the cutlass bearings?? Thanks, John

I think it depends on what size they are to begin with.

I am not sure if this is always the case or not but will tell you what I think.

If I recall correctly sometimes shaft logs and struts are good for 2 sizes, in other words whatever size that is in there now and one size smaller "OR" one size bigger. I know this can pertain to the struts, they make cutlass bearings that have a particular diameter and then have like 2 sizes for the inside diameter.

I dont know what size struts or logs you have to begin with but it may also depend on what year and what engines were originally equipped.


Hopefully some others can chime in with more definitive answers.

This is the time to get rid of the brronze shaft log and build a fiberglass one. See above.

I do not believe you can use the existing bronze one to go up a size. You would need to change it. I could be wrong. Maybe Bruce knows.

Some of the struts can be bored out to fit the 11/2 inch shaft. We were able to bore out mine and put in a thin walled cutlass bearing.

I re-used my logs for my repower, I upgraded to 1-1/2" and there's plenty of room...
