holding tank

i am shure we have discussed this some wher but i cannot find it ,is it mandatory to have a holding tank on a boat that did not come with one originally???? 1971 bert

If you have a head you have to have a holding tank. You can have a "Y" valve to discharge overboard, but it must be 3+ miles offshore. Walter

The above will give you federal laws.
State or local laws can be stricter. Check.

Also with marinas wanting to be certified as Green or Clean marinas anyone caught discharging a head will lose their dockage and can be fined.

If you see one of those flags flying, don't take a chance. There are plenty of condo commando types in marinas just looking for someone to rat on.

Can't you just have a locking devise on the head to prevent it's use w/i 3 miles?

Trey, a hose clamp on the handle of the valve or the handle removed is my understanding but it may have changed

i just throw a tie wrap on the valve, iam getting faster every time

The primary environmental concern with your sewage is not the urine (which is basically sterile) .

As I understand it, you can take a leak off the end of your dock, but if all you have in the holding tank is urine, you cannot discharge it.

Am I reading this correctly, I don't want to get fined.
