Dad and an Albe 24

Post by John F. »

So he went for a ride on a 21 CC, and while he liked it, he kept saying it just didn't ride like his Formula. He's now looking pretty hard at an Albe 24 express or CC with gas or diesel power through a jackshaft. I have a friend who has an express with a gas jackshaft, and she does feel like the Formula 233--which I guess it is. Any experience with these?

John:

I owned a 24 Albemarle for 5 years before I bought my Bertram31. Mine was a 1991 that I bought brand new. Had a 5.7 Volvo with duoprop. With a floscan I burned around 11 gallons per hour at 24kts (that was with only 2 barrels open) if I pushed it up to 35kts if burned around 18.

Great boat. Solid and well laid out. Only downside -- it wasn't a great drift boat and it was a bit sporty when slow trolling through the rips -- but at 24 degree bottom with only and 8 1/2 foot beam -- snap roll should be expected.

I had a custom hardtop fabricated for it and gunnel mounted outriggers. 2 years after I bought it I put a Nautical Design combination helm seat/leaning post (you could either climb up to sit or use it as a post) with a huge tackle storage section on it aft. Great addition.

Mine was the original sterndrive -- the engine box never got in the way - -not sure how the new style does the same. I bet the ride is a bit better with the engine more forward as she was bowlight.

I LOVED the boat.
