looking for copper bonding & a rubber type gas tank supp

Post by daydreams »

Hi everyone, After taking the summer off I'm back to work on the 28' the engine stringers are in and Im about to install the new gas tanks. I am looking for 1/4" - 3/8" thick rubber, or neoprene strips [or what ever will tolerate fuels] approximately 3/4" wide to rest the tanks on. I also need about 50' of the bonding copper. Any suggestions where to find these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Worst Marine for the copper bonding, unless you have a marine supply house near buy.

Alum. Tank? If so rubber might hold moisture which you don't want next to an alum tank.

If your going to put an elastomer under the tank:

>Use a fairly hard material, 1/4" thickness is plenty.
>Use an NBR based compound (Nitrile Buytal Rubber)
>Do not use EPDM based compound (hydrocarbons will eat this stuff up)

I would suggest calling a gasket company. Try http://ghxinc.com/

I have used these guys for years for gaskets, hose, etc.

Good Luck

I never thought worst marine would carry the copper bonding. Thanks I will stop in.

Scot, the aluminum tank is powder coated, it is partially sitting in the bottom part of the original fiberglass tank [I installed a drain plug in the glass tank in case condensation, etc. gets inbetween the tanks. I was going to glue the rubber, etc, strips to the aluminum tank. I will not use a EPDM caulk. One question, what is a EPDM caulk?

Not a caulk but a kind of rubber, Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer rubber to be specific.

you can buy boxes of neoprene strips in various thickness, intended to sit under fuel tanks.

made by Shields so any boat joint will carry it.
