Thinking about repowering over the winter need to replace 2 5.0 low profile gasser 230 hp in a 28. Mercruiser offers a V-6 4.5 250 hp anyone have or know someone with these engines?. Not sure if V-8 torque comes into play or not or if it's just hp that will matter. Any input appreciated.

HP is a number; torque is what turns the wheels. I replaced my 5.0's with 5.7's, and the difference in performance is obvious, especially when climbing up the back of a big sea. If you compare the torque charts for the two motors it is easy to see why--the 350's put out a lot more torque at a given rpm than the 305's. And if you stick with carbs it is a bolt in installation.
