Try using ReJex, (same people that make Corrosion-X), on your transom... Shines up like glass and lasts about 6 months or more, as long as you don't use harsh detergents to wash.

i agree put 2 coats on in the spring and the soot just washes away
visited the Palm Beach Boat Show this weekend. Ice Blue is obviously the popular color this year. If it wasn't White, it was Ice Blue. Small boats right up to the larger ones. Maybe a maroon or yellow here and there but Ice Blue was everywhere. We've changed our color selection to Aqua Mist just to be a little different.
