A guy came in the shop yesterday to show me one of his "Cool Finds"

You guys ever see anything like this......was a first for me. I think its pretty neat.

I have never seen anything like that. I doubt that much work went into something just so you could have a little weak illumination from the wicks.

Obviously the cage is to protect it from getting banged or knocked about.... obviously the gimble is to keep the oil from spilling. It looks like it comes from an era when enclosed lanterns were used, so I doubt it is just for illumination. There probably is a reason to be able to access the flame.

I'm thinkning battle lamp on a gun deck or something like that. A place to light the match on the "botefeux" (the stick thing) used to touch of the cannon???
