Yanmar water Pumps
Hey Guys,
I have the yanmar 315's and the raw water pumps on both engines leak at the drive shafts . The engines have about 300 hours on them. Any suggestions as why they are leaking? I usually run the engines every week at least to warm them up. Should i rebuild them or just replace them?

Re: Yanmar water Pumps
I had the same problem. I bought new ones. I was told to rebuild them they would not last. They were alot of $$$$$. Maybe rebuilding them would have been better. Sorry Im not much help. Maybe Bruce will chime in.
Re: Yanmar water Pumps
i replaced mine on the 4lha ste, i think i payed $550 per a few years ago,
dont think you can rebuild them, maybe its just the o rings where the pump meets the engine ??

Re: Yanmar water Pumps
I have rebuilt the water pumps, I am no mechanic. We buy the seals for less than $4 each at a a bearing & drive co in Nj. It takes about 30 min. to replace the 2 seals after removing the pump from the engine. You do need a gear puller. Once you see it done, it is a piece of cake. Get the manual and you will save some money. Good Luck
Re: Yanmar water Pumps
One other thing, if they are leaking at the opening, it is definitely the seals. There are 2 bolts holding the pump on the block with studs.
Re: Yanmar water Pumps
However if the shaft has form a slight groove where the seal sits ,the pumps will start to leak shortly after. The shaft can be sent out to Carl or Harry on this board and they will machine new shaft as opposed to replacing entire pump.

Bob Lico, sounds good to me, how do I get in touch with either one of them?
Re: Yanmar water Pumps
Bill you are in no so I guess you would go to Carl from Staten Island machine shop. You can pm.him he is on this board.as sim. I would suggest a stronger steel. We used to be a big luhr's dealer and sold a slew of 28 luhr's with twin Yanmars so we ran into this water pump issue many times.

Re: Yanmar water Pumps
Bob: I wonder if a Speedi-sleeve would fix the problem of the worn seal surface on the shaft. It might be cheaper to go with a new shaft, but Carl or Harry could better speak to this issue.

Also Depco Pump sells parts for them. Yanmar pumps start at page 124 in their Marine Catalog.

rawliegh
thous pumps are pulley driven
the 230s and 315 and others are all gear driven, i belive there are 2 O rings
one were the pump marrys to the engine
and one on the plate, it could just be the O rings
cant see the pump failing with 300 hrs, but ive been wrong before

Re: Yanmar water Pumps
The seal is as follows; Single Lip Seal ( X0529105) ( 16x28x7 mm ). You need 2 for each pump.
Re: Yanmar water Pumps
Rawleigh I guess you and me are are showing our age or experience once upon a time we used to call them " shaft savers " namely for the snub end of a crankshaft were it wears in the timing chain cover, the Yanmars are a different situation but you really surprise me with amazing enguinuity .yes there are two seal as Ed indicates but the shaft also wears you must be certain before you make a bandade fix.take the time and mike it up . A little burr and you destroy those seals.
