question for charlie j

Post by Bruce »

Charlie,
What's your opinion of the surge systems that are mounted behind the meter?

I'm familiar panel mounted surge units, but not behind meter types. Wondered if they are ac only or will block dc as in lightening using gdt.

Thanks.

bruce the only surge protection ive used is on the poles, we called them lightning arresters, they would take the hit, and direct it to ground and save the equipment,
not sure if the electric meters have that protection, any surge would be from the incoming source, the meter pan is grounded with a ground rod,i could make a call and find out if the meter itself is protected.
meter pan is grounded and tied to the nuetral so if it does get to the meter it will be directed to ground also

Charlie,

While on the subject, I have a 100,000 amp arrestor on the main box below the meter. Is there any way to test it as still being good after a strike?

Br,

Patrick

capt pat
i have never seen one below a meter we dont have them up hear
i would imagine you would have to disconnect it and test for continuity
bob lico might be a better source of info on resisdental applications.
i can see the need for them down south due to all the lightning strikes you guys have
florida being lightning alley
