I am sure the word is out by now and most of you guys no the deal, tons of bunker along the beach and you have to battle through gorilla blues but there are plenty of bass in the 20-30lb range.

Just this morning I was on Ocean Parkway at 7:30AM, must have been 50+ boats between West Gilgo and the Jones needle. Quick stop confirmed guys were fishing it hard and looked like a few hooked up.

Also stopped in the tackle shop and heard from a guy who was out at the chicken canyon who trolled up a number of bluefin, over the weekend I think..

I'm still in flats mode and will be out this afternoon.

plenty of bunker to the west but nothing under them, have to start pushing east, when this wind lays down or turns north

There are some big fish here. Had a 33# bass on fly this past friday. Many others around 20#.

No such luck for me, saw about 10 fish in the flats yesterday but couldn't hook up. We are still dealing with some serious slip gut which sucks had a few good follows until we picked up some weed on the fly. Interestingly enough the dirty flats held fish while the clean ones did not.

Seemed to be some scattered luck on the pods around Gilgo from what I heard. All fish in the 20-30# range.

So yesterday later in the day I'm up in an expanse of marshes in about two feet of water fishing the drains. I've had luck in the area but still exploring, it's a maze with dead ends, holes, really neat place...It's a small window before your high and dry with the tides.

On my way out a commercial guy with a carolina skiff loaded with gear from the oyster farms, comes by and yells STOP. Figuring this will be interesting I stop and say "what's up?"

"You from around here" he yells. "Ya why?" I said "I've been watching you" now I'm thinking I ran over his gear or invaded his territory "your not fishing where there are fish, how you gonna catch fish where there's no fish". After a long blank stare I said "Ok so where should I fish" figuring the last thing he's gonna do is actually tell me. He goes on to explain a few spots in great detail, including which spots produce on which part of the tides, really good local bayman info

I have been playing in 3-4ft of water in snake hill and steam boat but very few fish.

I know steam boat really well, lot's of fish in that area. Snake hill I don't fish much. Where I'm talking about is west of snake hill just east of the highway and north of the party boats. There are 3 or 4 ways you can get from the state channel to the southern part of the bridge from there. Unless you've got a flat boat your not going to be able to get around.

Thanks a million for the offer. Like you I have my house in many pieces right now and fishing is a couple of weeks away. 3 month old baby and dormer = no fishing.

I will take you up on that offer in the future though.

I hear ya. Weather is making this a home project weekend rather then fishing. The great thing about those spots is you can run over for an hour during nap time.

With whaler you'll still either need a push pole or trolling motor as you'll have to lift the engine. Easiest way is to start from the north side at the beginning of the outgoing and drift your way out.
