Brew its on the inboard side of the transom normally. I think around the deck line in roughly the center of the boat. We found ours there and I remember seeing at least 2 more in other project boats as they were coming apart. The weird thing was that ours didn't match half of the other numbers we found throughout the boat during demolition, I'm not sure it even matched our hull ID number.
Ours is a 77 and the other 2 boats I saw tags on were older yet.
Hope it helps... Bluefin are here inside of 4 miles, little fish up to around 80 still see some up your way?

I don't know how you got the 24 since 75 stands for the year built. Are you sure you are reading it correctly. It has to be on the transome as well as under deck in the inside of the transome on the center line.
Bob Lilco in a post a page or so back says the M stands for Military. I can not believe that many were built to military specs. The C stands for the month built. So in my case C would be March.

If you follow the logic posted by IRguy in a prior posting then this is how it should work.
OK everybody.. I finally spoke with Don Flippen of Bertram Miami. Here is the Bertram code for deciphering hull numbers.. assuming they are "normal".. which mine are not..
The hull number should be 12 characters..
Chars 1-3 is the manufacturer's name designation.. in our case "BER"
Char 4 is a letter which designates the boat length.. in our case H = 33' (for a 31' it is G)
Chars 5-8 are the manufacturer's "hull designation number".. Bertram's internal ID for the particular boat.
Char 9 is a letter designating the month the boat was completed (using A through L for the months of the year.. ie: Jan = A, Feb = B, etc)
Char 10 is a number, which is the last digit of the year of manufacture.. ie: my 1983 FBC, built in 1982, should have a 2 in space 10.
Chars 11-12 are the last 2 digits of the model year.

I still think the Month is not the 9th space. . Not sure what that is.
I think the month follows the year. In your case looks like 1980.
If I am correct F is June.
The M still has me baffled. I still can't beleive they are all built to military specs unless after a certain year that is how they did the layup forall of them. In the spring I have to check the boat sitting next to me. He is covered now so I can't see his numbers. His is a 76.

Tony ...
Is it possible that dealer had the boat, it was a 1974 and he ... not potentially wanting to take a "hit" for it being a "last years model", represented and sold it as a 1975 and titled it as such ?
The title says whatever the dealer put down on the application.

Guy's,
There were 3 different HIN # formats. The HIN# was required after November 1, 1972. It had to be embossed or on a plate on the starboard transom area. A combination of 12 letters and numbers were used.
In 1972 there were 2 formats in use, Straight Year and Model Year .
Straight Year would be as an example ABC 12345 08 72. ABC is the manufactures id code (Issued by the Coast Guard). 12345 is the production or serial number, 08 is the month of production, 72 is the year .
Model year would be as an example XYZ (manufactures code), 4567 ( serial # or production #) M ( desaignates that it using Model Year Format), 84 (model year) A (month of production)
The New Format took effect on August 1 , 1984
BMA (Manufacturers code) 45678 (production or serial #) H4 (Month of Production) 85 (Model Year)
The NEW FORMAT replaced the Straight Year and Model Year formats . It was optional as of January 1, 1984, but manditory August 1, 1984. Confidential HINS were not required proir to August 1, 1984 ( Second set of numbers usually hidden by the manufacturer)
The Key to month of production for the NEW FORMAT after August 1, 1984
A-January B- Febuary C- March D- April E- MAy F-June G- July H- August
I- September J_ October K- November L- December.
The Key to the month of production for the new format. Most boat companies changed there model years in August.
A-August B- September C- October D- November E- December F- January
G- Febuary H- March I April J- May K- June L-July
The letter I is not used anymore because it looks like a 1.
I got this from the Florida Marine Patrol to assist in the identification of stolen vessels. STOLEN BOAT SECTION - 904-488-5757
Now if your not totally confused try being a surveyor and looking at all the different formats , painted over HINS and missing plates and no standard HIN # requirements before 1972.
So the M is not Military Spec but it is the Model Year Format.

Wlbsr,
So from your HIN # BERG1474M74J315. Your boat is a Bertram hull number 1474 M- Model year format 1974 J- Month of May 315 Fly Bridge Cruiser.
I've seen both BER and BERG as manufacturers id code on different boats that I have surveyed.
312 is A convertible (Open Boat)
313 Bahia Mar (No Bridge small Cuddy Cabin)
314 Sport Fish (Open back, head between the V berth)
315 Fly Bridge Cruiser(Closed back,head on Starboard stand up enclosure
316 Express Cruiser (no Fly Bridge, enclosed stand-up head drive from atop the starboard engine box, soft or hard top over helm area)
317 Sedan (No Fly Bridge, helm station below, hard top)
The early 31's 1961-1963 had the hull number written on a label that is glassed into the hull under the port V berth area way forward, after 1963 the number is under the cockpit sole on the transom, centerline of the vessel under the teak deck board up high.

312 designates the open model (Moppie)
313 = hardtop model
314 = sport fish model
315 = fly bridge cruiser
316 = Bahia Mar model
317 = express model
I think you missed a little on the models ... not sure on the others, but I'm pretty sure Bahias are 316.
