When to install rubrail

I've been re-reading the tips section on PVC guardrail install.

I think I have picked out a rail from Taco for my Bertram 20 project.



In the tips section, it looks like the rail was installed prior to paint. Is this advisable or is it better to wait until hull and cap are fully painted?

that rail will be really difficult to bend around your boat, what does the flange look like?

Flange is 'butt joint' that is tabbed on the inside.



Most originally came with a simple hollow back stainless. I wanted a bit more meat behind.



Any suggestions?

Paint first, so the paint seam is under the rail.

On edit.......

Install for fit prior to paint. Then remove and paint. Then install with caulk.

I used Taco v21-9613 on a 25 and it worked out really nice, easy to get, easy to bend.

Raybo - That profile looks like it would work well with the shoebox construction of the 25, but not sure it how it would sit with the joint on the 20.

I have a sample of the one that I referenced, but you think it would be too stiff to bend around the bow?

I can send you a small piece and you can see for yourself, most local suppliers will have the rail and stainless, a v21-9755 would also be easy to work with and give you the same 1.5" height

The rail you pictured I do not think would work, a rail more along the lines of a taco v21-1025 would fit your boat better, but be VERY hard to bend, most boats that take that rail have mitered cuts and bow sections bent in a jig

Ideally if you go with the heavier rail you will want to fit the corners and bow prior to paint then remove.

I just stumbled across this in a Google search. Very helpful when trying to decide on one of the many, many rub rail options. B31 board strikes gold again!
