Old Engine vs New engine pics

I just thought I would post a couple pictures of the engine swap this past winter. The old 454 had been in the boat since 1986 and last year thanks to ethanol it shattered a couple of the lifters, I just changed the lifters out and finished the year, but after 4,400+ hours it was not going to make another year:

I know this engine just fits in there, but getting another set of 454's when I could get basically new MPI 496 HO engines for the same price. Anyways they fit and run nice, I just had to move the engine back to get the height down.

Alot of work, but worth it.

I would be happy to post the numbers. As some know I am not propped correctly now, but these are the numbers I get now. The old 454’s I did not have floscans for, but after 5 years of running it I could look at the trip odometer and could tell you within a gallon how much fuel the boat would take. 1 statute mile = 1 gallons of gas with a cruise of about 21-22 knots. The numbers on the new engines were done using the engine’s computer with the Diacom software and the GPS. I did a pass out (into the wind/current) and a pass in and averaged two. The Gals per hour is just the 1 engine, so I just multiplied by two to get the MPG in statute Miles.

650 RPM - 0.0 % Throttle - 3.2 Knots - 1.2 Gals/Hr - 1.73 MPG
1196 RPM - 9.1 % Throttle - 7 Knots - 3 Gals/Hr - 1.34 MPG
2450 RPM - 20 % Throttle - 15.8 Knots - 6.8 Gals/Hr - 1.32 MPG
3055 RPM - 25 % Throttle - 20.5 Knots - 9.9 Gals/Hr - 1.19 MPG
3360 RPM - 28 % Throttle - 23.3 Knots - 11.5 Gals/Hr -1.16 MPG
3550 RPM - 30 % Throttle - 24.8 Knots - 12.5 Gals/Hr - 1.14 MPG
3950 RPM - 34.4 % Throttle - 27.2 Knots - 16 Gals/Hr - 0.977 MPG
4110 RPM - 36.1 % Throttle - 28.4 Knots - 17.6 Gals/Hr - 0.926 MPG
4700 RPM - 46.4 % Throttle - 31.3 Knots - 23.4 Gals/Hr - 0.77 MPG
5100 RPM - 56.7 % Throttle - 28.9 Knots - 33.7 Gals/Hr - 0.67 MPG

I don’t know what WOT is because I would overrev the motors if I tried. In all I am very happy, better MPG, and best of all reliable/new.

Very clean, nice installation. The marinization on the newer BBCs look to be more compact than the older iron.

Looks great. When you get your props figured out, please post numbers again. It looks to be about a 15% increase in fuel mileage now--I'm curious to know where you'll wind up. 4400 hours--very impressive.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Oh and I just noticed in my last post with the preformance numbers, the last line I swapped Gals/hr with Knots:

it should be:

5100 RPM - 56.7 % Throttle - 33.7 Knots - 28.9 Gals/Hr - 0.67 MPG

Wow...

Bet when you dial it in a bit your MPG goes up at cruise. It really sounds like those engines are not working all that hard.

You may have stumbled into something...
