Aluminum again....

Post by Buju »

Redoing a alum. rub rail on a B46.
Have got the stainless cap off, old paint abraded off, and sanded the rail down fairly smooth.
The plan is to mask off the hull & gunnel with pre-taped visqueen
Then wet her down and apply Alumaprep, wait 5 minutes and rinse.
Then wet her down again and apply Alodine, wait 5 and rinse.

Here is where my question comes in...

Didn't Awlgrip used to have a zinc chromate 545 epoxy primer?

Or do I need to apply their z.c.wash primer first and follow up with the 545 for minor fairing? I sure thought they had a z.c. version of the 545, it'd sure save a little time if they did. Maybe it's something they discontinued when AkzoNobel bought out the Awlgrip line? Maybe I'm outta my melon? Wouldn't be the first time.. or the last.

Anyone?
I don't know what the world may want,
But a good stiff drink it surely dont,
Think I'll go and fix myself...a tall one.

yes they did a and a very good product .the epa took it off the market.we used to prime the race boat motors with this . the paint etched itself into the nickel blocks and the competition never was able to see the nickel color of the block and raise the question.
