Caught this little fella while fishing the bunker pods for stripers. 305.5lbs 13'6" in length on a shimano calcutta 400 with 30lb leader.
Had my father on the rod my brother and brother in law on the flyer and straight gaff. 1:43 minutes, before the gaff went in.
Had the right amount of talent and luck on board to pull this off. You should of seen that little 31 smoking back and spinning around to keep up with this fish. It gave me a bit of a horn driving on this one.

Nice threser... now, is that a bigeye or a common?
Helluva matchup on that gear, gonna remeber that one for awhile.
Love then calcutta 400 & 700's... they are capable of taking some serious
abuse...especially when guys load em up with braid and crank down on that drag... not that that is what you were doin by any means.

Nice going! 30 lb test...wow! That little Shimano 400 T.E. is my favorite reel...18 or 19 lbs of drag. How do you guys prepare the sharks once caught for tablefare? We catch alot of blacktips here in Tx and we usually clean them right then, but, limits and game wardens keep me from even jacking with them anymore. Lazy on my part...not keeping up with the regs and all.Good job!

Here's how we treat sharks in general. Its important to get the fish processed as quick as possible. This one was still pretty much alive when we hung it, however if we weren't going to weigh it we would of gutted and processed as much of the fish as legally possible to cool it down.
We bled the fish after weighing it and sawz alled the head off after gutting it. Finned it and brought it down to manageable size pieces (say 50 lbs each) From there the rounds were quartered and the spinal cord and blood lines removed. These quarters were steaked and skinned before packaging. No more than 2 days in the bag before it gets vac bagged and frozen
Cooking it on the grill: a short soak in Italian dressing and its been good to go.
Blackened works great as well butter one side spice both and go for it. I like to heat a cookie tray on the grill instead of doing it inside.

JP, Nice whiptail...very tough fish we landed one a few years back, they put there head down and pull...can get a little dicy at the boat with a six foot tail flippin around...should keep your lunch box full for a while. BH

I guess you guys would call these channel bass! We call them Red Fish here in TX. John caught the big ones a few months ago and the boat load of the smaller ones this last Saturday. I hear you on the cookie sheet routine that is how we have been doing the shrimp for awhile. The price on them for the past year is been $3.50 a pound, heads off (12 to 14 count per pound) pretty good bargain. Congratulations on the shark; sounds like some good eating. Pam
