I have a set of 230 merc small blocks have allways set the timing a couple of degrees behind, 6 deg. vs 8 deg with the thought of no pinging and engine life.Do I have much to gain going to the manufacturers spec of 8 deg.? any pros or cons?. txs,

ignition timing

I've kept my 454s at the factory 8 degrees BTDC, and they've last a long time. I've also been told that as long as everything is working right, its more important to set for proper timing at full advance--I forget the rpms/degrees, but I can look it up for you. Last couple of times I checked, when I timed at 8 BTDC I got what I was supposed to get at whatever the high rpm setting was, so I just check to get 8 at idle...and somehow they still run.
