ok i will bite. why would you connect both battery switches with positive cable? other then that nice clean installation.ok john from the top ; best method port engine dedicated battery ,starboard dedicated battery, then dedicated house battery. that is 3 seperate on /off 500 amp rated switches.second best; engine dedicated battery and dedicated house battery two on/ off switches (a little insurance would be a 500 ampere rated solonoid to parallel both battery banks) .third and last would be two battery with two switches .never consider a switch with a 1,2 off in a diesel installation.a connection between two switches could give murphy law the edge.

Bob,
Can you explain the whole never use a switch with 1,2,off. Mine also have 'Both". I think they are rated for 500 amps. Thanks

kevin if you allready own them prior to diesel installation keep them if they are rated 500 ampere.diesel engines are going to need at least a battery rated 500 ampere or more for starting or you might say 4d or multible battery bank .however remove any cables between switches and use 1,2, both as a simple on/off .in case of a short you would have a disaster.and at the very least you want to prevent one battery draining the other due to a unknown electrical fault or leaving a heavy electrical drawing loat connected.connection of two batterys by way of a solonoid still gives you isolation and a back up shoud one battery go dead at sea.i also recomend using a charger with isolation and isolation blocks. dead battery at sea is something you have to avoid at all possible costs by planning the battery system during installation you can avoid all the pitfalls.a gasser starts will a hell of alot less battery power.kevin the subject is vast if you want me to be more detailed just asked what part of the battery layout you want me to explain. you in particular go far offshore and need a foolproof system.

kevin you have 4d batterys don`t you. just sit back and think about the available short circuit or if one battery becomes grounded .with two 4d batterys you have available 2200 ampere you don`t want to depend on that 500 ampere switch to hold that current ----instant fire!!! take two switches and isolate them to there repective battery and you have half that current on one switch.NO INTERCONNECTING CABLE. you also have the ability to start engine on the other battery should one go bad.

When I get home I need to post some pics of mywire job. I will start another thread for it though.

Oh yeah, I am a bit jealous of that engine space too!
