Surgery Cancelled
Just got home, and boy did I give the doctors a scare. Was under for 45 minutes and they had trouble interbating me. It seems I have the biggest tongue they have seen in 30 years. Anyway, the entire anesthesiology staff including the head of dept., was in the room and by the time the airway was established, he felt too much time had passed and my oxygen saturation levels were too low to continue. Plus the fact that air had collected in my stomach and had to be pumped out. So they cancelled the surgery and kept me over night for observation.
The plan is to try again, in a couple of weeks. They also think that sleep apneia might also be a contributing factor and want that looked into as well. They will also use a baroscope to set the airway next time, which means they will be using a camera and i will be partially awake until the airway is established.

Can we just call you Mr. Big Tongue from now on?
I have never heard of a surgery being cancelled due to a large tongue.
Okay I'm done wit the sly remarks for now. I'm really not, I'm just to busy.
Glad to hear you are okay, it's better they be cautious then continue, good things are worth waiting for.

Being in the business I am in and having thousands of employees compain to me about our medical benefits, I thought I had heard it all when it came to reasons why a surgery did not come off but this is a new one on me. Lets see how the Insurance Company handles this one. Good luck, and I am sorry you were not able to get this surgery over with. The anticipation of the next time is not something to look forward too.

As I think about it, telling this group about your tongue might not have been the wise thing to do. You will never live this one down.
If your friends can't give you a good ribbing, who can.
Next year I hope to make it to a rendevous, I'll bring a trophy for "The Biggest Tongue".

Michelle tells me the same thing about my sleeping.Doug Crowther wrote:dude you have some serious apnea (sp?). no surprise on the tongue thing
You started to doze off on Charlie's boat in A/C and I thought you were going to choke to death.
I guess that's why my primary physician wants me to go for a sleep study before allowing me to clear for any more elective surgery.
