Yanmar lp315 water intake ?
I need to order a pair of Groco external sea strainer today per Capt Pats tip section. Does anyone know what diamater I need? The mechanic is in the field with the Yanmar manual.

John,
The engine raw water intake is 1 7/8". The through hull should be a 2" with a FULL FLOW 2" ball cock valve. A standard 2" ball valve only has a 1 1/2" actual opening...
The Groco strainers should be over sized to fit a 3" port. This over sizing will assure that you have adequite water supply through the strainer, even under less than optimum conditions. Be sure to toe in the leading edges of the strainer to maximize water flow over the strainer surface.

John: The Groco full port ball valve seacock is the best I've ever seen. Pricey, but excellent. I have one of those and one Apollo (my old standby brand). The Groco is hands down better. West sells them, but they are pricey! I have the SBV.
