sea strainers

Post by JohnCranston »

Are the glass bowl type still a good option?, or is there something better to go back with?
Sorry about all of the questions, but thanks for the help.

John,
If you are refering to strainers inside the boat this is what I suggest.
At the thru hull intake, outside the hull there should also be a strainer.

On my boat, I have the stock Bertram strainers under the hull. These are very small and have slotted openings that run the length of the strainer. I also had a pair of strainers inside the boat as well. However, I then decided to install groco style strainers with pinholes in them instead of slots due to the heavy concentration of eel grass in my area. I left the stock strainers on the hull and mounted the new ones right over the stock.

Groco strainers are wedge shaped and come either with slots or perforated, with a trap door to clean them out.

I left the stock strainers too, but have never seen anything in them. I think they may be overkill.

Rawliegh,

What I have is definitely overkill, but with the exception of the eel grass strainers, the rest was already on/in the boat when I got it.

Ours came through new with the Groco glass strainers and because of the eel grass we put the external strainers on also. Over Kill, may not be, actually I found some eel grass in the glass strainer one time. It some how snuck past the external strainer.

Thanks,
I'm going with the glass strainers and the Grocos as well.

Again, thanks.
