I like what's been done with this old one, no nonsense, shaved clean, wide open, ready to use. A 90hp 4 stroke would be a good addition at some point in time...

I don't know 'bout these newer Whalers, obviously not the same hull, supposed to be a great deal of penny pinching involved in the production as well, once Dougherty sold the company. But that's all heresay, I'm sure others on the board could shed more light on the old -vs- new Boston Whalers.

Interesting '75 with new 2 stroke power in the big bend... It has rhinoliner on the gunnels & sole like the first one, but it's a dark gray. I like to boat barefoot, this color will get HOT. Otherwise a pretty slick little whaler.

One thing to keep in mind with whalers is that the vast majority of the older boats will have saturated foam, just like our beloved B20's. They'll be heavier and in extreme cases, you'll have spongy decks, etc... but will keep going for years and years.

Have either of you guys considered the 18' Outrage instead of the Montauk? A helluva lot more boat...much, much better ride.

This info is just from a quick search on ebay & boat trader.com. I meant to look on boats.com, yachtworld, craigslist, & gsa auctions, but ran outta steam. Took a while to post the pics... couldn't get the properties right off of boattrader, had to drag em on the desktop, and put em in photobucket first.... Too much time on my hands today. Need to start up that teak job, hopefully tomorrow.

Now he's looking at a 17' Outrage after passing on all so far. One boat owner had glued carpet on the deck ! The other wants too much for an '83 hull and a '90 motor-$9500. Lemme know if you guys want to know more about these two in BR.
The outrage is a '97 and has the 21 degree deep V. Looks great on the computer. Wonder what the weight diff is between a 17 & 18 outrage?

That was Buju (Mark) who took all that trouble to find us both a boat...not me, good luck with the 18, we'll stick with the smaller Montauk.

Having owned a Whaler since 1962 (she now is with da Judge) and having ridden in many of all sizes, the fact is (1) high quality construction and finish, and (2) GD things ride like a powered ironing board, jar your teeth out. Nice go-slow boats.

I love my Montauk (1981 w/2000 Johnson 90 hp). Great on gas, really stable for a 17' boat, real feeling of safety in seas bigger than a 17' boat ever should be in, easy to trailer, and UV is right, really rough ride in any a chop. I wouldn't consider anything else in that size boat. I'd also recommend you buy a nice one, because they hold their value better than any boat you can buy. I could sell mine in a weekend for what I paid for it 6 years ago. Go for a ride in one before you buy if you haven't experienced a Montauk in a chop.
