Teak and holly sole

Post by wmachovina »

Put teak and holly sole on the 31 with 4 coats of west epoxy and was wondering what kind of topcoat to put on. Spar varnish, 1 or 2 part polyurethane? I know it may seem excessive, but afterall it is a nice boat. :-D

Bill,

Sand the epoxy down good with 120 grit, making sure that you leave no shinney spots. Use a good grade 1 part fast cure polyurethane that's intended for use on flooring & high traffic. Minimum of 3 coats initially. Maintenance coats later will only need to be two. Also use a satin finish rather than a hig gloss. The satin will be easier to maintain & won't show scratches as readily.

Don't use a 2 part material because it's likely not compatable with the epoxy & you'd be back to square one...

Capt Pat, thanks for the info, will attack the project soon, as the boat is almost ready to splash. Saw Buddy Boy through the fence at Hinckley, good color combp except my white is snow white, dark sunglasses required!
