After Cooler Coolant hose

So I decided it was time to replace all of the hoses on the engines. Everything is fine except for one line and I am hoping someone here has the answer.

Cummins 270 engines. There is a line running from the after cooler down behind the alternator. On my engine it is a 3/4-inch metal tube with a short piece of heater hose at each end.

Here is the issue, the tolerance for the distance between the short hose and the Alternator is giving me fits. First time I tried, stupid me just bought a piece of heavy-duty heater hose and when I went to swing the alternator back up into position it would not go into position. It was hitting the hose.

Ok, now I purchased a regular heater hose, not heavy duty, but still a no go. The alternator now goes up into position with a little coaxing butIt is rubbing on the alternator. I have tried pushing, pulling, and adjusting and still not go.

Has anyone tackled this problem and figured out how to make it work?

Tony I change every single hose on both engine (6BTA 5.9 M3 315 hp ) to Blue silicon except the big turbocharger output that high heat silicon . look beautiful and good forever

Tony all cummins hoses are METRIC ,remember that when ordering

Metric. I don't think I have ever seen a metric sized heater hose. UGh! That could make the difference. The tolerance is tight in there.

yes they are metric every damm one of them ,Most important the hose to the raw water pump is not 1 7/8" nor 2" it is metric !!!!! all available on Amazon

Over here EVERYTHING is in metric, EXCEPT tube diameters (but not lengths), and TV sizes!

If you go to a utility store and ask for a 19mm tube, nobody will understand.
But if you say 3/4, oh yeah, they all know what it means, DESPITE the fact that inches are used nowhere else on the continent.

The heater hose I have says both 3/4 and 19 mm on it, so I assume they say it is interchangeable.

I know I have to use metric wrenches on the engine but I never thought about the hose's until Bob mentioned it.

3/4" =.750
19mm=.748

A piece of copy paper or the thickness of the hair on your head is .003". Yes, for a hose size they are interchangeable.

That was my first guess when I saw it and I never gave it a thought when I started to replace the hose's. Measures what looks like inch and half, I purchase inch and half. Diesel Shop said just use 3/4 heater hose, I figure they are a big Cummins dealer, so they know.

Once I get my transmission coolers I will be on to the next project so I can get in the water. I have to repair a fiberglass tab on the stern cleat as it gave up the ghost.

That .003…is that for a red hair or a blond hair? As I remember those two (Red or Blonde) were the preferred standard of measurement for something that needed to be very, very close when I worked in the maintenance shops 100 years ago as a young man.

I don’t remember the quys referencing a hair from their head though….

Dang, I missed working in the shops when I made the jump to computer geek so many decades ago. Office folks are so much less colorful.

Google says Red Heads have thickest hair, but less or it. Blond hair tends to be thinner. By race Asians have the thickest hair and African descent people have the thinnest.
To be more exact, standard copy paper is .0038 to .004. We use paper for tool offsets when setting up machines. With a slight crush touching off we offset by .003 leaving a couple tenths to dial in.
