Fuel Coolers

I was going over the engines this weekend and I started to wonder about the fuel coolers. Mine Cummins are 10 years old and I was wondering if anyone knows what the life span of these are and if anyone changes them as standard maintence.

I had to replace a transmission cooler several years ago and that was a pain in the but trying to get all the water out of the transmissions. So I changed the other side just to prevent this happening again.

Would like to hear what others do with the fuel coolers to make sure they don't fail and cause water to get into the fue system.

From what I understand they are in many cases omitted and by-passed. The benefit is negligible and depending how your fuel lines are run can accomplish similar results.

Heard the same thing - many eliminate the fuel coolers on the cummins - more to go wrong than an actual benefit

I believe mine are fine, I am just wondering if I need to think about changing them. Not sure how hard bypassing them will be while they are in the boat.

It is tight in there.

Those that bypass them must see no difference in perfomance. From what I am reading on long runs you could see a loss of RPM's on the top side if the fuel gets too warm. But up here in NJ not sure that is an issue.

I saw that video. Problem is they do it outside the boat. As I get older, the thought of working on that side of the port engine makes me think for a while about jumping in there.

Makes me think as well. I'm probably going to pull my engines out of the garage this weekend and crank them before installing them in a week or so.
