I noticed on Facebook that Bayliss is working on a 31 refit----can't wait to see the final product.

I looked for it on their site and couldn't find it. If there's a link or they post pics, please post 'em up. I'd love to see what Bayliss does.

It's not on their site...at least not that I know of.

It is on their facebook page, I added a link below. As I am a dummy on Facebook all I can say is scroll down a bit and you should find a stripped down 31 Hull being worked on, flipped in a travel lifts straps. I looked to see if there was more Bertram stuff...but not sure how to find anything on facebook. But did get to look at their yacht builds...WoW incredible work.

What I find so impressive is the transom exhaust on these boats...not just Bayliss, but big Vikings, Garlingtons and...
A picture shot of transom does not do justice...it's a shot with someone standing next to see the true proportions...some of those you could just climb in. It is just something that gives me perspective on the size and speed, crazy how they cruise in the high 30knot range. Its like my house doing 40 mph...

From the Bayliss Boatworks July 2022 E-Bulletin


The 31' Bertram refit has been well underway for the past few months. Her cabin was replaced, she received flybridge modifications, and our crews have been working on her interior buildout. Our yard mechanical team supplied her with two Cummins 6BTA 370 engines with ZF gears, a Phasor 3.5 kW generator, a Seakeeper 3, and a 250-gallon fuel tank. She will be splashed later this month, bringing the project one step closer to completion.

Anybody know of anywhere they are documenting the rebuild? Knowing Bayliss it is going to end up being one of the highest end refits ever completed.

...where would the seakeeper fit?

They are installing a generator as well... I guess the gen could go outboard of one of the engines but that seakeeper has to be in the centerline of the boat

There is not that much room under the floor between the engines or in the cabin, right???

This boat has a seakeeper. I think they reduced fuel and put seakeeper in front of fuel tank. if you are doing better than 1.3 MPG, 180 gal is more than plenty for most. https://www.denisonyachtsales.com/yacht ... ia/8297993

That is kind of what I was thinking as the only real way or place to fit one...

There is another 31 that was listed as having one and the vessel was name "BONDO JOE"... I saw it listed for sale on a google search but none of the old listings showed any pics and it was listed north of 200K...

If anyone knows that boat they may be able to show some pics of the seakeeper (if the listing was accurate)

A friend of mine works for seakeeper. An immediate concern he had was loosing fuel capacity to make space, and the adequacy of the stock stringers to resist the twist and stress induced by the seakeeper.

I would find 180 gallons a little light if you were running to the Canyons off of NJ.

A 1965 boat came through with a 175 gallon tank. This one is at 185. So they gained 10 gallons. You could also add a saddle tank or two to make up the difference. Or you could find space under the V berth for an extra easy 50 gallons. I know you can get 50 gallons in the space below the companiionway. In fact Bertram in the early days sold a 50 gallon tank that they made that fit in that area.

If you are rebuilding the boat, the stringers can be modified to take the torque of the sea keeper. I bet in 3 years there will be one small enough to fit up under the cabin floor.

Bayliss just posted some info and they are installing a 250 gal fuel tank. Looks like the seakeeper 3 will go in front of the tank as the pics showed a deck mock-up with a hatch right at the forward part of the cockpit floor. (I think it is a hatch for where the seakeeper 3 will go).

Looks like the only place to run the exhaust is down the outboard stringers.

I have a feeling that the fuel tank is right up against the rudder shelf. But I still think that is still not enough room for 250. If it is, it is tight.

I see the fuel sender, I wouldn’t think making it a t-shape would get the capacity up to 250 considering the height of the stringers. Interesting tank configuration.

i made my tank longer and hold 240
still enough room for an accessible aft bilge pump

I am thinking that they may have (or plan to) fabricated an integral fuel tank like Tony Athens did on "SHOOTER". The tank could then be literally built around the sea-keeper

However pointless it is to guess at what they're doing, im having fun playing along.

1)Observation of fact
2) postulation of possibilities
3) rebuttal of postulations
4) repeat step 2 and 3 until step 5 is achieved
5a) wallow in the glory of guesing correctly or
5b) wallow in the shame of guesing incorrectly

One more thing we need established is how are we going to find out what was actually done? Otherwise we're stuck in step 2 and 3 forever

Not sure if any of you guys are on facebook, but here is a photo of the boat nearing completion. Check out the waterline at the transom. Like I said before, this is a heavy boat with a lot of weight aft.

Just finished up our maiden voyage on Blue Eagle to the Bahamas this past weekend. It was such an honor working on this special project with John Bayliss and the entire Bayliss Boatworks team, and is truly the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to finally own a 31'. I've admired them for almost 50 years, and they are as iconic a sport fishing boat as there is on the planet. Looking forward to many more adventures with the family in the coming years, and very proud to be a part of this community of passionate owners.

Appreciate the kind words very much. I've always been inspired by this community or passionate Bertram owners and their projects, and am really grateful to finally have one of my own. Bayliss did post a nice summary on Facebook and Instagram (along with a few pics), and I'll add more once I get set up with a hosting platform and figure out how to post!

Congratulations! I really love the work that was put in to this design and retrofit. I'm getting ready to start mine next year and I was very inspired by your work. I would like to ask though how you came to a decision to remove the stand up head. Will this boat be running charters or will it be mostly a dayboat?
