Intercom system

Post by TwoCoconuts »

Hello all - just finished re-doing the struts, props, shafts, deck stringers, deck, rudders, rudder shelf, and firewall bulkhead. If you all are interested I can put up the details on the job including parts lists and total costs...my question is a little more simple though. My father and I go out together and he can't hear all that well, especially when i'm on the bridge and hes on the deck chatting with my mom. Makes me nervous when there are some waves coming its a pain to communicate. I was thinking maybe someone knows of a 2 way pa system with a little speaker i could put down there and up on the bridge? Would make life easy.

What about just jgo old school and use a walkie talkie or something like this.

Or perhaps this, realizing that is not an age thing, has good points.

There was an ad for headphones with a mic in a recent Marling magazine. I’ll try to dig it out.

Mine has what we jokingly call the beer Bell. It's an old school doorbell located above the headliner in the cabin with a push button under the dash upstairs. It will sure get your attention!

I don't recommend Garmin VHF radios but if you install one and then have a wired extension at the helm https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/568161 it also works as a bridge to base intercom with a aux speaker.

Many vhf radios have a hail or pa function. Install cockpit spkr and wala.

My Icom Radio has an intercom function built in.
I use that with the family below quite often.
It works very good.
One radio up top and a remote mic below. I think they call it a Command Mic.
