Coverings boards

Teak covering boards. What is the thickness required and how attached? 5200? I have some nice boards Pete Fallon set me up with but they are only 1 1/2 inches thick. Can they be resawn and still be thick enough? Pete, does your friend have any more of that nice teak?

I have retired from surveying after the 4th knee implant, no more climbing in and out of vessels per doctors orders.

Rawleigh- how do you know Johns not putting covering boards on the plane?? Covering boards, a couple pair of pole holders and of course down riggers. He'd really cover a larger area...

John- it's coming along. That has become my standard answer.

Truth be told the end is finally in sight, maybe 40-50 hours of work to go...just hoping to get there before season ends...I really want to do a trial run.


How are your project coming along? How do you decide what to work on? Plane day or Truck day...maybe just go fishing.

I attached my 5/8” teak covering board with thickened epoxy and lots of clamps. The aft covering board has quite a radius , there is a twist the side boards as well. I followed the Capt's advice, did door skin templates , 45* corners, then copied onto 1/4 “ plywood making more adjustments to the corners, then redid again with 1/2 plywood which was obviously stiffer and found more angle/bevel adjustments to the corners. Copied all these template to the teak . Ground the old side decks and stern with 40 grit and dry fitted all teak parts to see what more challanges remained. Lots of bar clamps , c clamps , wooden wedges driven in to tighten the fit. I used lots of 2x4” across the width of the boat with c clamps and wedges, bar clamps to the bottom to which I had screwed a 2x4” timber to get a purchase Structure to screw /clamp to. Carried this bottom framing up the sides to attach a top 2x4” timber as well to drive wedges between the teak and the timber . Let it set for several days still there more than 10 years. 5200 is primarily used to keep Carvers together, no self respecting boat builder in south Florida would allow a tube of this stuff in his shop!

The next quest is a search for someone who can resaw these boards and not taper them. Ten feet by fourteen plus inches by one and a half inches. Dividing two boards evenly should give four halves of slightly less than three quarter inches ( just one half of the kerf). Should be able to cover the gunwales with three of these, maybe four. The boards are finished on four sides.
Marlin, I have seen the photos of the beautiful wood trim on your boat.
My poor boat sits at my dock in the summer and the boatyard in the winter and top sides are getting shabby. When I had the dock put in, the boathouse was designed but two neighbors objected and threatened court action. They don't like boathouses so I didn't build it.

They are using fake teak covering. A man made material, which is real man made material or real fake teak. It is still fake but it is real because it exists.

Does that help. It is a play on words.

It is like Astro Turf while it is not real grass it is real Astro Turf. Or you in the case of Astro Turf instead of "real" you could use the term "original".
