If you don't already have an AIS system on board, but do have a GPS that is NMEA 0183/2000 compliant... I would stick with ICOM.

If you have an up to date radar or plotter, the AIS will even display the nearby AIS signals on the chart screen, complete with the ship name and maybe even a picture.

The version of the Icom with the AIS is : ICOM IC-M506 21

It comes in several versions, two without the AIS. Did a little research 'cause I just bought one :)

Thanks for the recommendation.

I get defenders weekly deal email, this week they have a pretty good deal on a simrad VHF, they had the deal on earlier this year and I bought one, I'm considering getting a second. I have not hooked-up and tried the radio so I cannot comment on how well it would do.

I have the Simrad RS12. Works ok. Negatives: Hard to see, No keypad for changing channels, No AIS. But sends and receives good. Would have bought the RS35 at this price.
