Yanmar 230 + 1.5:1 transmission question

I found a pair of Yanmar 230hp engines with 1.5:1 transmissions. Ideally I would need 2:1 transmissions, but I can get the engines for around $10k. Right now the detroits are 170hp with 1.52:1 transmissions.

Would the Yanmars with the 1.5 work on my boat? Hatteras 34.

Hi is much does th at Hat weigh? Has to be close to 20,000. That is a lot of weight for those engines to push.

Tony, Hats are flat, they need less power than the equivalent in deep vee.
He has 170’s and still he’s not complaining.
How many hours?

Yeah, Hatt is pretty much flat. 1700 hrs

Plus 1800 pounds each vs 805 pounds each engine

1700 hours is getting up there. If the previous user was overpropped, it could be an issue. If he babied them you should get another 2,000 hours. Is there anyway to find out what his actual vs mfr spec WOT was?

No, they are mounted on a boat and its an estate sale. The PO died 2 years ago. They are in a 28ft dual console in the Florida Keys.

I'd make an offer for less. Not that 10K is too much, if motors are OK, but they must sell so they might take your offer.

Yes, that's what I'm going to do. The only problem is that it comes with a hull that I have to get rid of in the 2-3 days that I'm there. Donated, give it away, scrap it.

Bad news,
Called the marina where the mechanic that was going to remove the engines is located and they want the boat insured to haul it out, I'm not going to spend money on that as all I'm interested is the engines and I wanted to discard the hull.

Talk to your insurance broker. There should be a way around it. Insure it just for basic stuff maybe for a week, a month?
Insurance also valid for the trip to the dumpster or elsewhere.

What Yannis said. Get thdd insurance for a month. High deductible, only inddure to cover damaged to engines and if the boat is dropped on someone.

In case you need to scrap the hull, get the disposal cost. That could kill the deals more than insurance.

I spoke to the executor about the insurance and he told me he's going to look into it as it will need to come out of the water for any buyer, if he insures it, I have one less problem to deal with. I'll give him a few days.

Not sure if it helps, but the guy helping with my install had a older 40' Hatteras, installed 280hp Volvo's with very low hours. Boat ran 22knots, 27WOT and then 30knots with new wheels. After a few years of running up here, the boat was sold to be used as a Texas Charter boat. Guy who bought ran her down to Texas from NY, charters and runs boat back and forth to Mexico having little issues with a ton of hours racked up.

Point being, 280 is only 50 hp more and his boat was 6' longer and if I know Hatteras's a good deal heavier...
