House battery

Post by Donmystic1 »

Does anyone have a house battery(3rd)?
Where have you located the extra battery?
If I use an AGM which can weigh between 50-68 lbs.
And fit it with the two existing batteries in the starboard side it will probably cause the boat to list.
I think that I can fit a starting battery
Somewhere near the hold tank on the port side which would balance the boat a bit better.

Don-
For the first several years I owned my boat both Group 31 starting batteries and a Group 24 house battery were located outboard of the port engine.
The boat did have a slight list which was more noticeable when the tanks were light. Other than my annoyance I do not believe there were any serious ramifications.
I now have two group 31 starting batteries and two group 31 house batteries in the center of the bilge between the engines now.

Don-
I will try and go to my boat tomorrow for a picture.
Bob Lico has a much more photogenic bilge than I but it looks like the pictures are lost to the Photobucket change.

Don-
I forgot the batteries are out of the boat for the winter but I hope these pictures will be useful to you.
This picture is the bilge between the engines I am standing in the cabin looking aft as I took the picture.

This picture is from a lower angle. The shelf that the battery trays are bolted to is made of two layers of 3/8" Azek laminated with West System epoxy and fiberglass matt. The shelf sits on two mini stringers of Azek bedded in cabosil and epoxy and heavily filleted. The shelf is attached to the mini stringers with 12 large silicon bronze wood screws.

Hope this helps,
