Nav, thanks.
I doubt that they had safety laminated glass back in the 70's in boats, at least mine was safety alright (in that it broke into one million pieces) BUT it was held together thanks to the UV film that some previous owner had put. Not because of any internal lamination.
When we took the glass out, the UV film tore and millions of glass bits spread all over the place. Where the film remained intact the glass bits stayed together.

They had it back then too... Car windshields etc...Yannis wrote:I doubt that they had safety laminated glass back in the 70's in boats
Same principle... If you want to know for sure what you have now you can ask your window guy...Yannis wrote:it was held together thanks to the UV film that some previous owner had put

Yannis
You should have taken pictures of the step by step procedure. I am sure you could have used your free hand. LOL

Re: B28 side window removal
Gentlemen,
After thorough testing in Bertram weather, I can certify that changing the (shattered) rear starboard window in my 28, WITHOUT touching or removing the frame is 100% possible and can be 100% waterproof. If the glass guy also manages to copy the exact tint, like he did in my case, it is impossible to tell which window has been replaced and for what reason.
Complete removal of old glass bits, cleaning of grooves, measuring and manufacturing of new pane in the requested tint, placing of pane and removal of excess silicone, amounted to € 300. I did the pre and post cleaning parts myself.
Case closed!

Re: B28 side window removal
Yannis, Pete and others who have replaced side windows...
Can you replace the window felts after you pull out the windows?
Or does the entire frame need to be pulled in order to get the window felt internal tracks out and replaced?
I'd like to refurbish the side windows. The main reason is the window felts have disintegrated and turned to mush, good, and are keeping the windows from sliding properly.
I'm trying to figure out how those window felt tracks are adhered to the inside of the frames.
Thanks for any feedback!

Steve,
Before we go any further, where do you think you’ll find new felts?

I'm hoping a place like this would have something.

Re: B28 side window removal
Steve,
The 31 windows are difficult to remove because of the peculiar angles, hence it may be difficult with the felts too...
When I go down, sometime next week, I will look at my windows and try to see where these felts are and how to remove them.
For your info, all, or almost all of my own felts were shot so I had to remove them (some just slid off and disintegrated, others I had to pull out) without replacing them... i don’t have any leakages without them, the sliding parts slide fine, if I could find new felts I would put them back in, but in general I’m ok without them! (I can hear a sigh of relief coming from afar)!!
PS the fixed windows and the front hinged ones that open, do not have any felts. Only the two sliding ones, one on each side do have felts all around them.

Yannis
Thank you for the info.
I've tried to see how the felt tracks are adhered inside the frame. I'm not sure yet, as I don't see any screws.
My back windows don't slide either. One is still glass. The other, on the starboard side is plexi, it must have been replaced at some point I'm guessing.
Has anyone pulled and then re-sealed the curved windows?

Re: B28 side window removal
Steve,
Just because this is a 31 window issue, and not a 28, I propose to you to not mix the subjects and consider creating a new thread under the title “31 window removal and sealing”, or something along these lines.
There is much more wealth in the 31 window replacement topic that my “28 side window removal” original title may be confusing to potential contributors of ideas and solutions.
Thanks.
