My wife picked up my new "oversized rudders" from W. Palm Beach last Saturday morning.
Lets hope I have boat to install them on by this Saturday morning !!
Not at all pleased .......

Can you (or somebody on your behalf) access the boat?!... If so, make sure the batteries are fully charged, make sure cockpit drains aren't clogged and double up the lines...

Having said that, is crossing lake Okeechobee to Tampa an option?!... It looks like that would be a safer location right now... Just keep in mind that you might have to return home the long way... Hurricane Matthew threatens to test Lake Okeechobee's dike...

I have my next door neighbor and my mechanic both keeping an eye for me. We are going to tie off across the canal, so the we are away from the dock.
Luckily, my canal is a dog-leg, so there are houses in all directions around our "little pocket". I am more concerned with tidal surge than wind.

Can you tie the boat in the middle of the canal and give 2'-3' of slack on the lines on each side?!...

Your other option is to go out in the mess every so often and check on the lines... Release or take in as required....

If you set it up right, the surge should not have that great of an impact on her. That is the great part of being in the middle of the lagoon. You can give it enough slack to take on almost anything.

As a kid, it was always my job to swim the lines across the lagoon and tie them to the bulkhead on the other side. The boat rode in the middle of the lagoon and the surges were taken in stride. Being on the barrier island we were more effected after the eye passed and the wind switched to the west. The lagoon would have 4 ft waves along with the rising water.

Best wishes and prayers to my Southern brothers -- above all else -- keep you and your loved ones safe -- there is insurance for the tangible property!!!! Back when I had Tailhook, I was lucky enough to be in an oversized slip -- I had the first floating slip that abutted the main fixed dock -- the slip was 18' wide too! I always pulled Tailhook to the middle of the slip, doubled ever line and left enough slack that she could bob through tidal surges without touching either the floater or the fixed dock -- that worked out great....until the surge was such that the water was within 1 foot of going over the pilings!!!!! From that point on -- I was on the hard for any named storm.

Just when you think it can't get worse... Some of the models now have Matthew doing a loop and hitting the Bahamas, FL, GA, SC and NC TWICE... This is a twofer nobody wants...

For those on the hard, and a lesson learned from Sandy. Sink landscape augers in a few spots around the boat. For those that don't know them they are long screws about 48 inches used to hold up trees etc. Then run straps over the stern and bow area of the boat. They guys that did it during Sandy, found that when the Marina flooded the boat did not float away. Yes even with pulled sea cocks, since debris clogged the sea cocks. It also acted as a buffer for some, it kept other boats from hitting their boats. How do they know, they found boats strewn around their boats held away by the straps.

Can't say enough to wish all the best for those of you along the southeast coast. Be safe, and keep us all posted if there is anything we can do to help. Some of the more conservative boat owners all the way up here in Connecticut are even planning for the worst - a dock hand at our marina told me a Bertram 31 went up the CT River past our boat yelling "the winds are coming, the surge is coming" as they went through Essex harbor.....must have been Dug....

After the restoration Dug just completed, he could have been singing "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" and it would have still made sense for him to haul!

Bertram & Strike tied to dock across the canal and several feet off of my dock.
My dock is direct and easy access to ICW, but once off the ICW is a left turn then a right turn, creating a little "hurricane hole", with houses on all sides.
I liked the spot just for that reason....lets hope it pays off.

Matthew is still moving westward... Looks like landfall will be around Vero Beach... Everything north of Miami is getting ready to get hammered... AND, it looks like Matthew will go full circle and will come for seconds next week...

Carl, that was my issue. No local places to haul so I needed to get on it as I am not a customer and as such come last. So I needed to be proactive. So I am out and so is the sun!
Yannis, send her over, we could have some fun!!! Oh and send a checkbook, mine is pretty much gonzo. LOL!
As for this storm, I understand its now Category 5. I am hoping and praying for all my southern friends. Hold on tight. I hope there is no major issue for you.

Carl - best wishes to your dad, I can't help him out down there....but anyone in central Connecticut - if you ever can't find an emergency haul on the CT River, let me know. From Essex to Haddam, have connections at about 6 yards. We'd make sure you were set. I can't fathom turning anyone away - used to work at a couple yards, we'd put boats on side streets and pound tent poles into the grass if needed. Haven't had to do that in CT for many, many years. Have two cousins - one in Vero Beach, the other in Jacksonville. Told both that the foliage in New England is just about to light up - they might want to skedaddle up here for a week or two...

We can hope... And "hope springs eternal"... But the fact is that Matthew and Nicole might hit it off together and create another monster storm combining the energies that power each of them separately now... Granted, right now that scenario isn't likely but the weather does what it wants to do... It's better to be prepared and not have to implement the preparation then to get caught unprepared...

What's driving me nuts are the idiotic morons that are pinning this on so called "climate change"... As if hurricanes didn't occur before we had a single internal combustion engine... They could ask the Spanish how many ships they lost to hurricanes in the old days...

Right now it seems that Matthew is less feisty then earlier thought... The storm has remained offshore and things haven't gotten as bad as they could have gotten... Nevertheless, over 300 people have been killed to date (mostly in Haiti) and hundreds of thousands are without power in FL...

We'll have to wait till the storm surge recedes to be able to evaluate the extend of the damage...

And we'll have to wait and see what Matthew does next... Will it go out to sea and lose power (energy) while doing the 360 or will it pick up power (energy)... Either one is possible...

In short, so far Matthew has been considerably less then worst possible but it ain't over until the fat lady sings...

House and fleet did well.
My neighbor that was staying at the house because we have impact windows went back to his house at 6:30 and said boats were barely moving.

All my FL friends from Miami up to Palm Beach report the same thing, lot's of wind and rain but really not that bad... My guess is that as Matthew remained offshore the storm was being experienced as less fierce then it would otherwise have been... Having said that, other friends on the west coast (Punta Gorda) reported that even they experienced Matthew albeit as a tropical storm...

That is great news Steve, and everyone weathering the storm. For those north in FL, and GA/SC, best wishes to ride out the rest of it. On a side note, I love poking around yards for parts etc. that I can find for possible upgrades, and look what I found today - a great set of wheels, running gear, bow rail, some awesome windows, lots of chrome. Heck, the whole package together looked awesome, so had to take a pic of my find...

Matthew is hanging out right on the coast near the FL/GA border but it's now a cat 2 hurricane...

Nicole has been down graded to a tropical storm...

However, the future still looks interesting and may surprise us in a bad way...

Duchess was here in North Palm Beach, FL for Hurricane Matthew; not in Hope Town, Bahamas. Either way we dodged the bullet. No damage to report of here in S. FL nor in Hope Town, Bahamas. Small stuff, like tree limbs, etc. We were very lucky.
I tied her up across the canal, doubled the lines. My brother had made some heavy duty lines with chains enclosed in chafe guards that loop around the dock pole or tree. He had downsized to a trailerable boat a few years ago and donated them to me. A few years ago, I thought, "Man, not sure if I'll ever use these!" A few days ago I was happy to find them still in the chest, ready for battle. I used the chains mostly on the starboard side. Notice the roof peeled back on the house in the far background. Thank you to Bruce, who had the good idea to run the generator during the storm in order to keep the batteries charged, (this was the morning of the storms arrival). However, I was already 30 miles South of the boat at home in Delray Beach. So Bruce went over and turned on the generator and flipped the switches for the batteries, checked my lines. He lives close to my folks where the boat is docked. The clincher is with the boat tied like this, you have to swim out to it! Which I did a few times, but did not expect Bruce to do so. Thank you!! This board is a family. Patrick would have been proud.

It looks like the fat lady is on the stage... Matthew (currently off the NC coast) has been down graded to a tropical storm and is headed eastward into the Atlantic... It doesn't look like it's going to do 360 and come back for seconds...

Tropical storm Nicole is headed north towards Bermuda...

Matthew and Nicole might still meet up but that would be to the northeast of Bermuda and by that time they'll be even more depleted of their energies...

Tony, Hope Town did fine. Lost power for a day, minimal damage. Andros and Grand Bahama got the worst of it. Photos just now showing up. Destruction in some areas.

As far as Matthew goes the fat lady has sung... BUT, there are over 1,000 people dead in Haiti and there are spots in the Bahamas where extensive damage has occurred... There's also been some damage in the US... Matthew was as bad as they come but it's route prevented it from doing much more damage in lives and property (of which it was capable)... Had it run 15-20 miles more to the west when it passed FL it would have been really bad...

Tropical storm Nicole is still around and is picking up steam... She'll be back to being a hurricane after the weekend... Her forecasted path is going to take her north to Bermuda and then northeast into the atlantic...
