MTU Supporting Detroit 2 strokes

Post by scot »

Ran across some interesting info on MTU and the 2 stroke DDs. MTU is now fully supporting these engines world wide. Appears they are still manufacturing new engines for the military (6V53 & 8V71) and new long blocks for everyone else. They have also come out with a recon program.. "Reliabilt" to provide recon 53, 71 & 92 series engines. I wonder if their recon program is like Cummins, i.e. "recon" wink, wink. MTU is claiming they will be supporting all 2 stroke parts for the foreseeable future. I guess with 3.5 million engines built since 1938 and over 300,000 engines still in service, it's a market that was too big for them to ignore. They are really promoting the old iron, asking for stories, testimonials, etc.

I guess the EPA's mandated "bullet to the head" couldn't do the 2 stroke in after all. Right on!!!!!

It'd be nice if MTU (or anybody) would show my DD 8.2s a little love. Virtually no parts support at all anymore.

Aren't the 8.2's the diesel version of a big block gas engine? GM tried them back in the late 80's in the Cadillac's they didn't work worth a damn. Time to get some reconed Cummins for you boat.

I think you're referring to GMC Toroflows. They're supposed to have been pretty awful. DD 8.2s were DDs first real shot at a 4-stroke diesel and DD's answer to Cat's 3208. There are/were lots of 8.2s in busses and dump trucks. The 8.2s aren't bad as long as they don't overheat, and the weak point in the marinization is the cooling system. I'd love a set of Cummins, but will keep these as long as they run which I hope is awhile
