Anthem of the Seas cruise ship

Post by Bertramp »

Cruise ship Anthem of the Seas got caught in some very nasty weather and ultimately turned back after getting well beaten up on a trip from New Jersey heading for Florida. Am I being overly critical or did someone show some poor judgement here ?

No, you are correct! Same for the container ship that went down off of the Bahamas, God rest their souls.

Possibly... I wouldn't be able to say without access to the information known when certain decisions were made...

Tomorrow morning if you go on the internet at around 9AM EST, tune into 970 AM the Answer. The host Mike Gallagher is scheduled to have an interview with the Capt.

I bet he does not show up.

Weather that turns back a 800 or greater foot ship doesn't usually appear from nowhere.....wave heights go from 5 to 10 to 20 to 30 in steps.
Not usually from 5 to 30 in one set.
I have more than once "not gone", because those with me might be uncomfortable or downright petrified.
In my mind, trips that I might do with certain crew are not necessarily trips that I would make with totally unknowing and inexperienced passengers/tourists.
Sadly, captains are often forced to make "uncomfortable" decisions in order to keep employment .... and I think this may have been one of those scenarios.

The call turned into a hoax, but to what Steve said, this would have been a Company call since there was no way, going from NJ to FL could they go around this storm. Waited a couple of days would have been about it. If it was earlier in the season and the weather was warm, they would have sent that ship North to cruise up to Maine.
