Post by Navatech »

Most if not all of us have a ditch bag... What do you have in yours?!...

To start the thread I'll list (in no particular order) what I have in mine:
  • Waterproof floating PLB
  • Handheld waterproof floating VHF radio
  • First aid kit
  • Water
  • Power bars
  • LED night time signaling device (replaces flares)
  • Signalling mirror
  • Whistle
  • Emergency "space" blankets

A knife, some fishing line with a hook, a pair of ...glasses so you see what you're doing, anti snake/scorpion serum, that green syringe with adaptors that brings out the poison, a hat, matches, and as Bruce said, a shovel ...to dig yourself in !

Are you planning on being trapped in a snake infested island or are you trying to keep from drowing and starving to death. Scorpians and Snake serum. Hate to go over board with you.

Coming from Bruce the shovel is not for him. It's for someone else after the baseball bat is used.

Tony, Yannis is Greek and boats in Aegean... Lots of small unpopulated islands... Well, humanly unpopulated... They are inhabited by scorpions and snakes... But it beats being in the water...

Tony, Nav is right.

Obviously, we're boating in seriously...different waters!
Over here, you'll have to deal with the fact that you're in the water alright, but at some point, sooner or later, you'll end up on a rock. There are no 2 random islands in the Aegean more than 10 miles apart (hence my main compass removal last year, to make space for more...useful instrumentation).
The point is that once you've survived the swimming part it's silly to dry out in the sun like a pancake.
As for the serum, no, the place is not infested by snakes or scorpions, rather, its better to be equiped than not.
If you end up on a deserted rock OR on a deserted side of a normal island, chances are you'll have to spend sometime waiting for rescue. It could be hours, but probably it will be days... Not like our friend Hanks in "survivor", but after the first few power bars are digested, you'll learn to break sea snails for bait and fish to eat. Damn, i hate fish...

Kevin, I'm probably missing something in this shovel story, I thought it were a normal shovel... And baseball is simply...unknown in Europe.

Bruce's comment is another attack on us poor Italians who he thinks just because we are from NJ, we kill people with Baseball bats and use the shovel to bury the body.

In actuality, we just use cement to cast them new shoes and then let them sleep with the fish.

The lime is usually poored over the body when buried to help it disappear.

Tony, tell Bruce this is too complicated !
In Italy, they just dig a bullet in their head and do not even bother to bury them. On Sunday however they go to church...
