Looks like my Airmar B744 has stopped working. Looking for a temporary (and cheap) solution. Has anyone used the P79 in-hull transducer?

It may be a lazy way...but I have an extra combo unit that came with a puck. Figured I'd use till end of season and buy thru hull for the following year. In trying to locate that perfect spot I found the thing worked perfectly just sitting in a bag of water laying in hull with cable tie. End of season I emptied water...next season I filled.

Not sure I'd go that method for my main unit...but for a backup or temporary.


Then again permanent puck mount...
Last puck I used was for tower depth gauge... worked great till I epoxied. Then it lost its shallow water readings...which was the reason for installing up top in the first place. Thought I was doing it correctly, good spot, cleaned hull ground flat, used the right epoxy.

Al, Thanks but I'm not hauling the boat till November.

Carl, I think Ill try the Bag with water idea. I have a transom mount for an old hummingbird that has the 6 pin connector. Not sure of the pin-out however. Might not work. If not I'll try the P79. Going to mount the Garmin 546s in the cabin anyway as a backup next year. Its being replaced on the bridge by the Simrad NSS8.

I had a P79 for a couple of months. It worked well. I had it sitting right behind the main bulkhead and I remember it as being fine. I did not mount the bracket to the hull. Just zip tied the transducer in place. With traditional packing and a deck that leaks to the bilge I have a wet bilge, that may have helped me.

I have never used an in-hull transducer, but will probably go this direction on the current project. Here's my question for you guys that have used them, or from a transducer / electronic guru;

If a small (6") area in the V or CL of the bilge is leveled with additions of fiberglass to create a flat spot.. will the transducer work better sitting flat in the bottom against solid fiberglass?

As the keel section of the B25 is between 5/8" - 3/4" thick, I believe the addition of a flat section would be around 1" thick, the keel is already fairly flat directly on the CL.

I've seen that one and yes as always your advice is the best, flush mounting into the hull is correct way to do this. At year whatever (I've lost count)... I'm totally fatigued with modifying this boat, too many summers spent "itchin" and not fishing. I've got to float at some point before I'm too old to use it LOL. As you probably figured out, I'm seriously on the hunt for acceptable short cuts :-O

The in hull pucks can work pretty good. I still like thru hull best.

After shearing at least two off the bottom of the boat I had thought about building the box inside...


Then I found the flush mount transducer. It protrudes slightly from the bottom, no wedges required as angle is built into the unit. You just pick the best angle to match the hull have arrow pointing forward when installing.

You can call it the lazy way to achieve a flush thru hull.
