rust spots on Awlgrip
I think that 304 ss bolts were used to secure the cleats...got a little rust. What's the best product to get it off?
Thanks.
John.

Re: rust spots on Awlgrip
The bolts might be 304, which eventually rust a bit on their own. But it's also possible that the rust came from installing 316 stainless hardware with non stainless tools. Stainless steel loves carbon, and will eat it up on contact. Eventually you wind up with rust, usually in screw heads and bolt faces.
I have no idea how to remove rust stains from Awlgrip, but the stainless tool tip is a good one to remember.

Toiler bowl cleaner will take rust stains out. I use sno bowl. Rinse all metal surfaces very well to neutralize as it will actually cause rust if left for too long.

I think I may be misunderstanding the question wrong. But perhaps "neverdull"? We use it on our crime bikes that have tiny " spots" of rust and it takes them clean off.

I use this. It's for removing rust stain and ..deodorant marks from clothes ! At the detergents' shelf in supermarkets.

Light staining-
Magic Erasers work wonders on it. Use light cleaning soap, simple green, or if heavy stain use Roll Off.
Heavy Staining-
WHINK Rust Stain Remover works very well, mix some with water and use GLOVES!! and wipe around the rust area. Then wipe clean with new cloth. I used this on the Steel hull 1972 108" Burger I worked on all the time.
Black Streak (Star Brite) remover also works well for some staining.
All I did on this yacht was clean, clean and clean more.

I also have some rust to clean up on my awlgrip, some of the finishing washers I used were not stainless!! AHH!

Re: rust spots on Awlgrip
I use Marykate brand 'On & Off Hull & Bottom Cleaner' to get rust stains from the flybridge railing/seat's stanchions off the awl gripped deck.
Soak lightly, scrub stains out with an old toothbrush, mop up with a sponge, final rinse with water and dry off with terry cloth.
Then a light coat of wax afterwards just on the immediate areas prone to rust stains to protect against immediate re-staining.
On &Off is a light acid [Hydrochloric, Phosphoric & Oxalic] so proceed with caution!
Treatment usually lasts 6+ months then repeat.

Y10 was what weused 35 years years ago in the boatyard. It is a mild acid.

Re: rust spots on Awlgrip
Excuse me sir, I'm looking for a product.
Whats the name?
Well, the first letter is a triangle, then an i, but without the dot, then half of the infinity symbol, then what looks like the paragraph symbol, an o, an upside down Y...
Oh, Jack Daniels. Liquor, Aisle 5.
No, its a cleaning product. For rust.
Whatever you say, but Jack Daniels is on aisle 5.
No, no, really. Its a cleaning product. Dr. Beckmann.
Look pal. I don't give a F who your shrink is or how you escaped from the loony bin, but all liquor is on aisle 5.

OK IR and Hyena, you made your point ! LOL :-) Especially Hyena you must have gotten back and forth quite a few times ! By the way, that first word is pronounced "Diavolakos", meaning Little Devil, c'mon its not so hard to make the letter association. Start with the triangle which is a "D" !!
I'm laughing, because everyone here proposes each, a different product from the previous guy !
Magic markers, Y10, Marycate, Whink, Black Streak, Neverdull, Sno Bowl, you name it !
I only tried to be helpful, in case you had the same product with..different lettering.
I'm still laughing... Once you decide what the best one is, let me know too.
Cheers !

Re: rust spots on Awlgrip
As stated above: "Sno Bowl" toilet bowl cleaner or "On-Off" boat hull cleaner will remove rust stains in a matter of minutes.
Re: rust spots on Awlgrip
I have been using the WHINK Rust Stain Remover, for years and it works amazing. whip on then rinse. However, I believe it is basically muriatic acid. I would try any of the products on a test area first, just to make sure that they only take off the rust, not the paint.

Re: rust spots on Awlgrip
Go in a welding shop and buy passivation product for stainless steel, no more rust after this treatment
and always use stainless tolls, when i can't find stainless tools for a bolt or other i use grease and when the work is finish i clean all with wd40, and if you regularly take care of your stainless, no more rust !
Regards
